☀ Ahead of the Union Budget the Union finance minister Arun Jaitley tabled the Economic Survey 2016-17 in Parliament budget session.
- The Economic Survey reviews the developments in the Indian economy over the previous 12 months, summarizes the performance on major development programmes, and highlights the policy initiatives of the government and the prospects of the economy in the short to medium term.
- It has advocated for the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as an alternative to the various social welfare schemes in an effort to reduce poverty.
- The survey juxtaposes the benefits and costs of the UBI scheme in the context of the philosophy of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The Survey says the UBI, based on the principles of universality, unconditionality and agency, is a conceptually appealing idea.
- The Survey concludes that the UBI is a powerful idea whose time even if not ripe for implementation, is ripe for serious discussion.
☀ Basant Panchami is being celebrated today, marking the beginning of spring season. The festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the month of ‘Magha’. Schools and educational institutes celebrate Saraswati Puja.
☀ Bengaluru Traffic Police has installed Red Light Violation Detection cameras at ten important junctions in the city to book offenders. These cameras can identify the licence plate of vehicles and generate challans.
☀ Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma has been appointed the Ambassador of the Swachh Bharat campaign by the Ministry of Urban Development. She will be focussing on women-centric aspects of open defecation.
Note that: Actor Amitabh Bachchan is already an ambassador of the Swachh Bharat campaign.
☀ The Karnataka government has decided to bring an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA), 1960 for conducting traditional sports of Kambala and bull-cart race in the State.
☀ Meghalaya’s first ever Apparel and Garment Centre has been recently inaugurated at Ampati. The Centre will create employment opportunities for both men and women of the region, thereby empowering them economically. The Centre has been set up at a cost of approximately Rs. 14.26 crore, under the North East Region Textiles Promotion Scheme (NERTPS) of the Ministry of Textiles.

☀ Gambia’s new President, Adama Barrow, has removed ‘Islamic’ from the official name of the country pledging more reforms in this West African nation. Muslims constitute 90% of the total Gambian population.
Note that: The word ‘Islamic’ was added by former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh in 2015, making it the Islamic Republic of The Gambia.
☀ Saudi Arabia will end its decades-old tax-free status after its cabinet approved an IMF-backed 5% value-added tax (VAT) to be imposed across six Gulf countries from next year. A collapse in the prices of crude oil had hit the world’s biggest oil exporter, the government reported a record budget deficit of $97 billion (Rs 6.5 lakh crore) last year.
☀ Pakistan has declined an invitation by the Indian Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to attend South Asian Speakers’ Summit to be held in Indore next month. The summit will be attended by Speakers of Parliament from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka among other countries.
Note that: Earlier, India had boycotted a Commonwealth Parliamentary Union meeting in Islamabad in 2015.
☀ African Union has re-admitted Morocco “back” after a 33-year absence after 39 out of 54 member states voted in favour of its return at the 28th African leader’s Summit in Ethiopia.
- Note that : Morocco had left African Union in 1984 after it recognized the independence of Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara.
- Chad’s Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat has been elected as the Chairman of the African Union (AU) commission at the 28th AU summit in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.
- He replaces Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who was the first female AU chief.

☀ The India Post Payment Bank (IPPB), a basic financial services facility, has been launched simultaneously in Raipur and Ranchi as a pilot over a video conference by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely with plans to scale it up to 650 branches by the end of September.

☀ Bengaluru Police has made it mandatory for people to give their Aadhaar card details to watch IPL matches in the city. People buying tickets at the stadium will have to undergo a biometric test before purchasing passes, while online buyers will be required to key in their Aadhaar number.
☀ India will take on England in a must win third and final T20 International match in Bengaluru today. The match will start at 7 PM. Following the defeat in the first game at Kanpur, India had levelled the 3-match series with a 5-run win over England in a nail-biting thriller in Nagpur on Sunday.
☀ Former Union Minister E Ahamed has passed away in the wee hours after suffering from heart attack, He represented the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency. He has served as the Minister of State for External Affairs, Minister of State for Railways and Minister of State for Human Resource Development in the Manmohan Singh UPA government.
