☀ Sex ratio at birth (SRB) in Haryana, this past year has touched the 900-mark for the first time in almost two decades. Note that: Two years earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ambitious “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (B3P) campaign against female foeticide in Panipat in January 2015.
☀ The National Green Tribunal has issued notices to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Delhi government, Delhi Pollution Control Committee and Delhi Cantonment Board while hearing a plea that challenged the ban on manufacture, sale, storage, usage, import and transport of plastic bags in the city.
☀The Gujarat government has launched a student startup fund under which it will provide Rs 200 crore in grants to startups led by students. This fund is aimed to support around 1,000 student-led startups and establish a pre-incubation support system at all the universities across the state. The government would also help these startups to file for patents.
☀ The Supreme Court has dismissed a Telangana government petition against a decision of the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal-II to limit the re-allocation of the river water only to the two successor States of Andhra and Telangana, and not dabble with the share of water enjoyed by the other two riparian States — Maharashtra and Karnataka.
☀ The Indian Army has successfully conducted ‘user-validation’ trials of indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) Dhanush in the Himalayas. Now it can be inducted into the Army.
☀ Supreme Court has indicated that it may at a “relevant time” order the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to exclusively look into revelations made in the Panama papers.

☀ The 74th Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held in California. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone-starrer ‘La La Land’ became the most awarded movie in Golden Globe history, after bagging seven awards including the Best Motion Picture for the comedy or musical category.
- Gosling and Stone won the Best Actor and Actress awards respectively
- Damien Chazelle won the Best Director award for the movie ‘La La Land‘.
- ‘Moonlight’ has won the Best Motion Picture Award in the drama category.
- Casey Affleck won the Best Actor-drama for ‘Manchester by the Sea’.
- Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress in the same category for ‘Elle‘.
☀ Actor Amitabh Bachchan was honored with an award by the US Embassy for his contribution to the US-India partnership on tuberculosis. Bachchan had suffered from tuberculosis in 2000, is now a brand ambassador for the initiative.
☀ The Russian Air Force will add 5 new Sukhoi T-50 supersonic fighter jets to its fleet this year as part of plans to modernise its military.

☀ The recently-released data by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Customs show a 50 per cent jump in smuggling of Indian, foreign and counterfeit currency notes over the previous years.
☀ Centre allows Provident Fund contribution via private banks. Labour Ministry has allowed employers to make such payments “through scheduled banks in India, including private sector banks.” Presently, contributions can be made only through nationalised banks and payment portal PayGov.

☀ Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the world’s best player at the inaugural Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich. Ronaldo has also won the Ballon d’Or in December. Both these honours are recognition for success in the Champions League with Real and Euro 2016 with Portugal.
- Carli Lloyd of the United States was named the world’s best female player.
☀ Former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has passed away at the age of 82 years. Rafsanjani served as the Iran’s President from 1989 to 1997, had been heading the Expediency Council, which was trying to resolve disputes between the Iranian parliament and the Guardian Council.
