☀ In a study, it has been revealed that the Bene Israel community living in the western part of India carries genetic proof of the Jewish roots. According to their oral history, the Bene Israel people descended from a handful of Jewish shipwreck survivors on India’s Konkan shore up to 2,000 years ago.
☀ According to the Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution Database released by WHO, Delhi is no longer the most polluted city in the world. The national capital now ranks at No. 11 on the list. Zabol, an Iranian city, is now the most polluted city in the world, according to the data for PM 2.5 pollution. However, Delhi’s annual mean of PM 2.5 is 122 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), while the WHO guideline value stands at 10 µg/m³.
☀ The government has decided to discontinue five-year plans after the current one ends in March 2017. It will be replaced with a longer vision of 15 years that will factor in social goals and sustainable development goals.

☀ The USA has activated its $800-million missile defence system in Romania, triggering protests from Russia. This reportedly is a part of USA’s defensive umbrella that will stretch from Greenland to Portugal. US officials have aimed it for protecting Europe from countries like Iran.
☀ The US has said that India meets missile technology control regime requirements and is ready for entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). These remarks came in response to China and Pakistan joining hands to oppose India becoming a member of the NSG.
- About NSG: Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is a multinational body with 48 members.
- It is aimed at reducing nuclear proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of materials that may be used for nuclear weapon development.
- Interestingly, the NSG was set up in 1974 as a reaction to India’s nuclear tests to stop the alleged misuse of nuclear material meant for peaceful purposes.

☀ The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is acting upon recommendations of the Special Investigation Team on black money. The Supreme Court appointed SIT on black money last year had suggested that SEBI should strengthen its norms to keep a tab on beneficial ownership of P-Notes as they were widely used by foreign investors and could be prone to misuse. SEBI has made strict requirements for issuance and transfer of P-Notes and put the onus on investors to ensure compliance with anti-money laundering law.
