☀ India and Russia have signed an agreement for cooperation in the development of a network of 25 integrated infrastructure Agro irradiation centres.

Why Irradiation centers are required?

In irradiation, food products are subjected to a low dosage of radiation to treat them for germs and insects, increasing their longevity and shelf life.

In India, according to estimates, post-harvest losses in food and food grains are around 40-50 per cent. These are primarily due to insect infestation, microbiological contamination, physiological changes due to sprouting and ripening, and poor shelf life.

The wastage of fruits and vegetables alone is about Rs. 60,000 crore annually. Including cereals, meat, pulses and flowers, the annual loss is estimated to be Rs. 2,50,000 crores.

☀ India has decided to eliminate use of HFC-23, a Green House Gas (GHG) that harms the ozone layer by 2030. This decision was taken during the 28th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol at Kigali in Rwanda.

  • This will check emissions of HFC-23 equivalent to 100 million tonnes of CO2 over the next 15 years.
  • What is HFC-23? It is a by-product of HCFC-22 (Hydrochloroflurocarbon-22), used in industrial refrigeration. It is a highly potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with global warming potential of 14,800 times more than that of CO2.

☀ India has been ranked low at 97th among the 118 countries surveyed in 2016 Global Hunger Index (GHI).
This index was released by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

  • India’s global hunger index or GHI score of 28.5 is worse than the developing country average score of 21.3.
  • On the severity scale, a GHI score of less than 10 means “low” prevalence of hunger while a score of more than 50 implies an “extremely alarming” situation.
  • The GHI score is a multidimensional index composed of four indicators : proportion of undernourished in the population, and
    prevalence of child mortality,
