National Important Current Affair – 19 February 2017

■  Today is Chhatrapati Shivaji’s 368th birth Anniversary. Shivaji Bhonsle was a great warrior King of Marathas, who carved a niche for himself with his guerrilla tactics, and established the Maratha kingdom fighting Mughals. The day is also known as Shiv Jayanti and is being celebrated with traditional fervour in Maharashtra.

■  Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy won the trust vote by a slender margin that was held after eviction of opposition DMK MLAs and walk out by the Congress. M Palaniswamy’s confidence motion got 122 votes in favour and 11 against. Palaniswamy hails it as an endorsement of the House for his Government to continue. However, Opposition parties have dubbed the trust vote as a farce.

■  Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has inaugurated the 2-day South Asian Speakers’ Summit on ‘Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)‘ at Indore. The summit sees participation from – President of Inter-Parliamentary Union Saber Chowdhury ; Speaker of National Assembly of Afghanistan Abdul Raouf Ibrahimi ; Speaker of Bangladeshi Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury ; Speaker of National Assembly of Bhutan Jigme Zangpo ; Speaker of Sri Lankan Parliament Karu Jayasuriya ; Speaker of Parliament of Maldives Abdulla Maseeh Mohammad ; Speaker of Parliament of Nepal Onasari Gharti. While Pakistan and Myanmar are not participating in the summit.

  • On the first day of the summit speakers of six countries deliberated on ways to achieve sustainable development goals.

■  Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain has announced that Delhiites can now avail the facility of major tests such as MRI, PET and CT scan free of cost at 21 private laboratories in the city. Patients referred either by 30 Delhi government hospitals or 23 state-run polyclinics in the city can avail these facilities.

■  Third phase of polling has begun today in Uttar Pradesh, in 69 constituencies spread over 12 districts. The districts which will go for poll in this phase are Farrukhabad, Hardoi, Kannauj, Mainpuri, Etawah, Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Auraiya, Lucknow, Unnao, Sitapur and Barabanki.

■  The Delhi government has added 100 new GPS-enabled buses in its fleet and plans to add 250 more in the coming months. The passengers will be given tickets through e-ticketing machines.

  • The new buses also have mobile charging sockets.

International Today’s Current Affairs – 19 February 2017

■  Vice President Hamid Ansari is visiting Rwanda and Uganda as part of efforts to build diplomatic relations with the African countries.

■  In order to regulate marriages of minority Hindus in the country, the Pakistani Senate has unanimously passed the Hindu Marriage Bill. It will help Hindus to get a documentary proof of their marriage and also discourage forced conversions to Islam. The bill which is due for the President’s approval will become the first personal law for Pakistani Hindus.

 

Economics Current Affairs Today – 19 February 2017

■  The National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Authority (NPPA) has asked manufacturers and importers of coronary stents to submit details, including price list of their products, before 1st of next month.

  • The drug pricing regulator also asked the manufacturers to furnish quarterly returns of production, import and sale of coronary stents.
Previously this week, the NPPA had slashed prices of life-saving coronary stents by up to 85 per cent by capping them at Rs 7,260 for bare metal stents and Rs 29,600 for drug eluting variety of stents.

 

■  E-commerce platform Snapdeal is in talks for merger with Paytm’s e-commerce website, called Paytm Mall. This deal was initiated by both the companies’ common investor, China’s Alibaba. Note that:  Japan’s SoftBank will be a major beneficiary of the possible merger, as it reported a loss of Rs 2,300 crore mainly from investments in Snapdeal.

 

Sports Current Affair News – 19 February 2017

■  Sandeep Kumar of Haryana has won the men’s 50 kilometre event of the National Race Walking Championships held in New Delhi. Sandeep also smashed his own national record, clocking 3hours, 55 minutes and 59.05 seconds.

  • With his brilliant performance, he also qualified for London World Championships in August.

■  The Indian Women’s team has won a silver at the Asian Rugby Sevens Trophy tournament at Vientiane, Laos. A total of seven countries from across Asia including South Korea, Philippines, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, India and hosts Laos played for top honours in the tournament. All the seven teams played on a Round Robin basis.
