☀ Supreme Court has today stated that divorce granted by ecclesiastical tribunal under Christian personal law are not valid as it cannot override the law.
☀ In Rajasthan, Jaipur Literature Festival has begun in the pink city. Celebrated writers, thinkers, journalists, historians, poets, novelists and musicians are participating in this five day event.
☀ Days after Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis activated 500 WiFi hotspots in Mumbai, the state government will launch a mobile app to help citizens find the nearest hotspot, called Aaple Sarkar Mum WiFi.
☀ Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Paneerselvam will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to seek promulgation of an ordinance to allow Jallikattu in the state. The Chief Minister has urged people to withdraw their protests over the Jallikattu issue which has been banned by the Supreme Court.
☀ The Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar launched a dedicated web portal ‘ShaGun’ for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan at New Delhi.
- ‘ShaGun’ aims to capture and showcase innovations and progress in Elementary Education sector of India by continuous monitoring of the flagship scheme – Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
☀ The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution for creating a conducive atmosphere for the return of Kashmiri Pandits and other minorities.
- Note that: Kashmiri Pandits, Sikhs and some Muslims were forced to migrate 27 years ago.
☀ India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft ‘Tejas’ will make its debut by flying past the Rajpath on the country’s 67th Republic Day this year. Indigenously made helicopters Rudra and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Dhruv will also showcase a fly-past on January 26.

☀ Indian actress Priyanka Chopra has won the favourite dramatic TV actress trophy for her role in “Quantico” at the 2017 People’s Choice Awards. Another Indian-origin star Lilly Singh was named as favourite YouTube star, who runs a youtube channel by name “Superwoman”.
- Note that: American actress and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres became the most awarded person in the history of People’s Choice Awards, after winning 3 awards at the ceremony.
☀ Indian city Bengaluru has emerged as the most dynamic city in the world, according to recently released annual by Jones Lang LaSalle’s City Momentum Index. Another Indian city Hyderabad stood at 5th place in the index.

☀ The world’s first computer virus for an IBM computer, called ‘Brain’, was released 31 years ago on 19th January 1986. The virus was transmitted through floppy disks.
- Brain was created by Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi from Lahore, Pakistan.
☀ Outgoing US President Barack Obama telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to thank him for his partnership that enhanced the relations between India and America.
☀ Russian and Turkish jets have carried out their first joint strikes on Islamic State terror group inside Syria in the suburbs of the town of al-Bab, Aleppo province.
☀ United Nation’s Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution expressing full support to Gambia’s new President Adama Barrow and calling on ex-leader Yahya Jammeh to step down.
Economics Today’s Current Affair Capsule – 20 January 2017
☀ Gujarat government has announced salary hike (ranging between 63% to 124%) of its fixed pay employees as per the Minimum Wages recommended by 7th pay commission. It will be implemented from the 1st February and will benefit over 1 lakh 18 thousand employees working in different cadres at fix pay.
☀ The I-T department has asked banks to report deposits in any account worth Rs 10 lakh in a year. It also asked banks to report cash payments of Rs 1 lakh or more on credit card bills.
☀ Cabinet approved Rs. 10,000-crore incentive for electronic manufacturing by March 2018. It will help moving towards the goal of ‘Net Zero imports’ in electronics by 2020.
Sports News Current Affair Capsule – 20 January 2017
☀The second one day cricket match between India and England was won by the Indian side in Cuttack.
☀ English Premier League side Manchester United has became the world’s richest football club, with a record revenue of over Rs 4,300 crore for the 2015-16 season.
☀ In the Australian open, Leander Paes and his Brazilian partner Andre Sa lost in the first round of the men’s doubles to Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi.
