☀ The Central Water Commission has rejected Odisha’s objection against the construction of barrages on the Mahanadi upper catchment by Chhattisgarh Government. It has allowed Chhattisgarh to continue the construction work of the projects in the Mahanadi, by saying that there would be no damage to Odisha if dams were constructed in the upper catchment of Mahanadi basin.
☀ The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to introduce amendments to the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Bill, 2015 in Parliament.
- It will effectively prohibit benami transactions and consequently prevent circumvention of law through unfair means.
- It also empowers the Government to confiscate benami property by following due procedure.
- However, those who declare their benami properties under income declaration scheme will get immunity under the Benami Act as clarified by the government earlier.
☀ The Cabinet also cleared introduction of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2016 in Parliament. It will benefit a large number of transgender persons, mitigate the stigma, discrimination and abuse against this marginalized section and aims to bring them into the mainstream of society.
☀ The Cabinet also gave approval for establishment of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh with capacity of 750 beds, at a cost of 1,011 crore rupees.
☀ BJP has expelled its Uttar Pradesh unit vice president Dayashankar Singh from the party for his derogatory remarks against BSP Chief Mayawati.
☀ Delhi government has launched a dengue awareness programme in 200 schools. The Delhi Medical Association, DMA, aims to ensure that students carry an effective message for the prevention of the disease to their homes and in their neighbourhoods.

☀The Union Cabinet has approved incorporation of Sagarmala Development Company under Companies Act with an initial authorized share capital of 1,000 crore rupees.
- This will give a push to port-led economic development.
- The Company will then provide equity support to the project Special Purpose Vehicles and funding support to the residual projects under the Sagarmala Programme.
☀ The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, CCEA has approved construction of a new dry dock within Cochin Shipyard Limited to augment the shipbuilding and repair capacity of the country.
☀ The CCEA also approved installation of Ghatampur Thermal Power Project of 1980 Mega Watt capacity in Uttar Pradesh state at an estimated cost of over 17 thousand crore rupees.
☀ Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued its draft guidelines for standards of instant noodles and proposed that egg powder may be added to them. This comes after the maggi controvesry last year. The food regulator has also issued draft guidelines for quality standards of fortified atta, maida and rice, durum wheat maida and pearl millet flour.

☀ Mohammed Shahid, who was a part of the 1980 Moscow Olympics gold-winning Indian hockey team, has passed away at age of 56 years. Shahid, was considered among India’s best hockey players, had received the Arjuna Award in 1981. Mohammed Shahid was a part of India’s last Olympic medal-winning hockey team.
