☀ Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has announced the implementation of 3% reservation for differently-abled persons in government jobs in the Union Territory.
☀ India has successfully test-fired nuclear capable cruise missile Nirbhay from Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. This is third launch of Nirbhay. The maiden launch was conducted in March 2013 and second test was conducted in October 2014. This test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
☀ The Black Cat commandos of the elite counter-terrorism force National Security Guard are set to participate in the Republic Day celebrations for the first time in 2017.
- Till now, NSG’s association with the celebrations was limited to sanitising the venue and ensuring security along the parade route.
☀ The Union minister for Textiles, Smriti Irani has launched India’s 2nd Centre of Excellence for Sericulture in Bengaluru to boost the silk industry. India’s first such centre is in Ranchi , set up by the Central Silk Board.
- Note that: India currently imports nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of high quality raw silk from China.

☀The US president, Barack Obama, has blocked new leases for oil and gas drilling in sections of the Arctic and Atlantic, which is a high-stakes bid to hinder exploration and tie down Donald Trump’s hands in near future.
- This protection covers an area of the Arctic, roughly the size of Spain or Thailand, and 31 sea canyons in the Atlantic.
- These measures will “protect a sensitive and unique ecosystem.”
- Obama has also warned that the risk of oil spills “are significant,” and the ability “to clean up from a spill in the region’s harsh conditions is limited.”
Obama’s second year in office was dominated by the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which poured millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It could not be stopped for 87 days, devastating wildlife and fishing-dependent communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama.
☀ India is ranked 4th in the Global Wind Power Installed Capacity index with cumulative installed wind power generation capacity of 25,088 MW in 2015.
- This index has been released as part of the Global Wind Report: Annual Market, flagship publication of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
- It is topped by China followed by USA and Germany.
☀ The Northern Hemisphere of the planet observed the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day and longest night of the year on 21st December.
☀ Dubai is building Al Maktoum International airport, a second airport in the south of the city, which is set to become the world’s largest airport upon completion.
- This airport will spread across 35,000 acres and will be able to accommodate about 220 million passengers annually.
- It will take an estimated period of 12 years for completion.

☀ Finance Ministry has asked Public Sector Banks to restrict fees on payments through Immediate Payment Service- IMPS and Unified Payments Interface –UPI, to the extent that is applicable for NEFT fund transfer of over 1,000 rupees.
IMPS (Immediate Payment Service )is an interbank electronic instant mobile money transfer service through mobile phones.
The UPI (Unified Payments Interface) app enables customers to make online as well as offline payment to merchants from their bank account.
☀ The printing of each new Rs. 2,000 note costs the RBI Rs. 3.54, while the Rs. 500 note costs ₹3.09, according to an RTI response.
☀ Deutsche Bank will offer all its male employees in India, six months of childcare leave if they are primary caregivers, from January next year. This policy also covers surrogacy and adoption and aligns it with parental leave entitlements.
☀ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) withdrew the restrictions imposed on deposits of Rs. 5,000 and above for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliant accounts. This has come two days after the RBI had announced deposits above ₹5,000 in old banknotes can be made only once till December 30.
Note that: KYC is a process by which banks obtain information about the customers’ identity and address.
☀ Income Tax officials have conducted raids on the residence of Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Rama Mohana Rao and some of his close associates.
