☀ The National Green Tribunal has directed the East Coast Railway to pay Rs. 50 lakh fine for operating the Jakhapura Railway Siding in Odisha, without taking consent from the State Pollution Control Board. The NGT has invoked its ‘Polluter Pays’ principle to impose fine on the Railways.

  • The ‘polluters pays’ principle says that those who produce pollution should bear the costs of managing it to prevent damage to human health and the environment.

☀ The Election Commission will conduct polls afresh in due course of time in two Assembly Constituencies of Tamil Nadu following evidence of money being used to influence voters. Earlier, the EC had on two occasions postponed the polls for the Aravkurichi and Tanjavur constituencies.

 

☀Ministry of Power and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have jointly launched India’s first integrated web portal (www.nzeb.in) to promote and mainstream Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in India.

  • This portal provides complete information about Net Zero Energy Buildings.
  • NZEB generate as much energy as they use, through the use of efficient lighting and equipment, integration of renewable energy technologies, and best practice design strategies.

  • It resulted in French victory.
  • The 1916 offensive in Verdun lasted 300 days and claimed more than 3 lakh lives.

 Nepal has unveiled a nearly 10 billion US dollar Budget for fiscal year 2016-17, which will focus on implementing the new Constitution and accelerating post-quake reconstruction.

☀ Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into India have increased by 29% to a record $40 billion during 2015-16.

  • Of the FDI inflows (equity) in FY’16, services sector (including financial, banking, insurance, non-financial / business, outsourcing, R&D, courier, technology testing and analysis) attracted maximum investments, followed by computer hardware and software, trading business and automobile industry.
  • Maximum inflows (equity) were from Singapore , followed by Mauritius , the US , the Netherlands and Japan.

Lakshadweep has become the first Union Territory (UT) to sign “24×7 Power for All” document. It chalks out a plan to increase solar capacity of the region from 2.15 MW to 8.45 MW.  The ‘Power for All’ programme aims to provide each household access to electricity, 24×7 Power supply by 2019.
