☀ India’s latest communication satellite GSAT-18 was successfully launched by the heavy duty Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou in French Guiana.
- ISRO’s GSAT-18 adds to India’s fleet of 14 operational telecommunication satellites.
- GSAT-18, aims at providing telecommunication services.
☀ The Telangana government is finalising plans to break up the existing 10 districts into 31 smaller ones for their easy administration.
☀ Former ISRO Chairman and space scientist Prof Udupi Ramachandra Rao became the first Indian to be inducted in the Hall of Fame of International Astronautical Federation (IAF) for his outstanding contribution to the progress of astronautics.
☀ Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the Guard Van of Goods (Freight) Train, the first to be equipped with a zero-discharge bio-toilet in its guard van. This van has a solar-powered light, a fan and a mobile charging point.
☀ President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the first edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit on the theme ‘Beyond 2015: People, Planet and Progress’ organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi.
- President said that we need to follow a twin-tracked approach of limiting the rise of climate change while ensuring the existence of sufficient resources to meet our future developmental requirements.
- This objective mandates the efficient use of earth’s natural resource.
☀ All ASI Protected Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites have been declared ‘Polythene Free Zones’. All State Governments have been advised to support ASI in keeping Monuments Polythene Free up to 300 meters from the protected boundaries of the Monuments.
☀ The United Nations released a postage stamp to honour late Carnatic musician MS Subbulakshmi, who had performed at the UN General Assembly 50 years ago. The stamp, valued at $1.20 (around ₹80), features a photograph of Subbulakshmi and the UN symbol.
- Note that : 2016 marks the birth centenary of Subbulakshmi, who was the first musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna.
☀ The Chief Minister of Sikkim Pawan Chamling was conferred with the 2016 ‘Sustainable Development Leadership Award’ by President Pranab Mukherjee during the World Sustainable Development Summit. He has been awarded for his vision and leadership in environment and sustainable development that led to the establishment of Sikkim as India’s first and only fully organic state.
International News Daily Current Affair Capsule – 7 October 2016

☀ India is hosting the Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) next month. This is the first AMCDRR after the advent of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRRR), adopted at the third UN World Conference in Sendai, Japan in March, 2015. It will set the direction of Sendai Framework implementation in the region.
About AMCDRR: Established in 2005, AMCDRR is a biennial conference jointly organized by different Asian countries and the UNISDR. So far, six AMCDRR conferences have been organised. India had also hosted the second AMCDRR in New Delhi in 2007.
☀ Germany and France have signed an agreement to share military transport planes and announced plans to share an air base in the French city of Orleans. This has come after Germany accused Britain of “paralyzing” EU efforts for military integration by voting to leave the EU.
☀ Sri Lanka and India are going to sign the Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) by the year-end to strengthen economic ties. The ETCA is expected to help the island country gain better access to India’s market.
☀ India ranks 19th among 28 nations in the Biopharmaceutical Competitiveness Survey, commissioned by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. In the survey, countries were graded on scientific capabilities and infrastructure, clinical research conditions and framework, regulatory system, market access and financing, and effective intellectual property protections.
☀ Russia is using the end days of the Obama administration to strengthen Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s hold on power, expand the territory he controls in Syria and constrain the options of the next U.S. President in responding to the ongoing civil war. A successful Russia-Syria offensive on the city of Aleppo would redraw the map. It could complicate any plans for further United States military action in Syria.

☀ Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Sushil Chandra appointed as Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). It is the apex policy making body for the Income Tax department. Chandra is a 1980 batch officer of IRS (Income Tax), currently a Member (Investigation) of the CBDT.
☀ Paytm, online payments and m-commerce platform, has appointed former Citigroup’s Managing Director Madhur Deora as the company’s Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President. Note that: Paytm is scheduled to launch its first payments bank during Diwali this year.
