National Important Current Affairs Update – 8 January 2017

☀ Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Portuguese counterpart Dr Antonio Costa will inaugurate the main convention of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in Bengaluru.

☀ The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will launch two mobile apps – ‘m-Parivahan’ and ‘e-challan‘ for enhance road safety and facilitate citizen interaction.

  • ‘m-Parivahan’ : It is an app that can be used to establish the genuineness of a vehicle and driver.
  • ‘e-challan’ : It is an enforcement app to be used by traffic police and transport authorities.

☀ Newly launched mobile payments app BHIM and Unified Payment Interface (UPI) will be a part of this year’s Republic Day parade along with tableaus on demonetisation. In a first, the National Security Guards will also take part in the parade.

☀ Delhi government has approved the ‘Good Samaritan Policy’ under which monetary incentive of ₹2,000 and appreciation certificate will be given to people who help road accident victims in the city.

  • This scheme is intended to encourage people to bring accident victims in emergency situations to hospitals so that someone’s life could be saved.

 Major General (Retd) GD Bakshi’s book titled “Bose: An Indian Samurai : Netaji and the INA : a Military Assessment” has claimed that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose didn’t die in a plane crash, but was tortured to death by the British.

☀ Snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and rains in the plains have intensified cold conditions in the northern region including the national capital, Delhi.

☀ Norway is going to become the first nation to switch off its FM radio network, with the parliament approving a proposal to shift to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) from January 11 in the northern city of Bodoe.

☀ United Arab Emirates has banned private citizens from keeping exotic wild animals, like lions or tigers, as pets. Note that: Keeping exotic creatures as pets is considered a status symbol in Gulf countries.

☀ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has agreed to provide ₹100 crore in ₹100 currency notes to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) to ease the acute shortage of ₹100 notes in Nepal. Note that: The RBI extends ₹600 crore exchange facility to Nepal every fiscal.

☀ The US Army has revised its uniform-policy for people seeking religious accommodations, thereby making it easier for Sikhs and Muslims to obtain approval to dress and groom themselves according to their religious customs.

☀ India’s per capita income is estimated to cross ₹1 lakh in 2016-17, a measure for computing living standards, is 10.4% higher than ₹93,293 in previous fiscal, according to government data.

☀ Indian Squash player Velavan Senthilkumar has won the British Junior Open after defeating the compatriot Abhay Singh. This was the first time in the tournament’s 91-year history that two Indians faced off in the final.
