National Important Current Affairs – 9 and 10 April 2017

■  The Union Agriculture Ministry has collaborated with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), a wing of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for geo-tagging agricultural assets. Agriculture Ministry under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) and NRSC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding this.

■ In Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission has cancelled the by-poll to the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency in Chennai which was held on wednesday. This action was taken due to large scale violations of model code of conduct and charges of disbursal of huge amount of money to voters. 

  • EC further said, by-poll would be held in due course when the vitiating effect created by the distribution of money and gift items gets removed with the passage of time and the atmosphere in the constituency becomes conducive to the holding of free and fair election.

The Income Tax (IT) authorities have issued summons to the Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijayabhaskar to appear before them today in connection with the raid on his premises

■ The state of Madhya Pradesh has launched Deendayal Antyodaya Rasoi Yojana, a populist subsidised meal scheme for poor in the state. In the first phase of the scheme launched by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, 49 districts headquarters across the state are being covered.

  • Now Madhya Pradesh has become 3rd state in the country to have a populist subsidised meal scheme.  The other two states are Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.

■ President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the Mental Healthcare Act. This bill entails that suicide attempts by a mentally ill person will not be punishable under this new law. A person who attempts suicide shall be presumed to be suffering from mental illness at that time and will not be punished under the Indian Penal Code. It will strengthen the mental healthcare facilities in the society.

 

International Current Affairs Capsule – 9 and 10 April 2017

■ US President Donald Trump has nominated prominent Indian-American law expert Neomi Rao as Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). She will oversee the US President’s plan to eliminate 75% of federal regulations.

  • Indian-American Vishal Amin has also been appointed as Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator in the Executive Office of the President (IP czar). He will coordinate US law-enforcement strategy around copyright, patents and trademarks.

■ Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold delegation level talks with the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in New Delhi. Turnbull arrived in New Delhi last evening on a four-day visit to India.The visiting Prime Minister has been accorded ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Co-operation in renewable energy, clean coal and bio-fuels is high on the agenda of the visit.

■  United States and China have agreed to pursue a ‘100-day plan’  which is aimed at reducing the US trade deficit with China. This decision  was taken by US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in their first summit held in Florida, US. They have also agreed to adopt the US-China Comprehensive Dialogue. 

 

Economics Today’s Current Affair Capsule – 9 and 10 April 2017

■  All cash payments of over Rs. 2 lakh to settle loans and credit card bills during the 50-day period after demonetisation will have to be disclosed in the new Income Tax return form. The government will match the deposits made after post demonetisation with the annual income to ensure that unaccounted cash hasn’t been used to make payments.

■ The market size of the luxury sector in India expected to reach $100 billion in eight years from the current $7-$8 billion. This sector will require greater attention and facilitation to ensure that it fits into the government’s Make in India initiative.

 

Sports News Current Affair Capsule – 9 and 10 April 2017

■Mercedes’ British Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton has defeated Ferrari’s four-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel to lift his fifth title at the Chinese Grand Prix.
