Today’s National News Current Affairs – 11 February 2017

☀ Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya on his death anniversary today. Upadhyay was one of the most important leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the present day Bharatiya Janata Party. He passed away on February 11, 1968.

☀The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has launched pilot Revenue Insurance Scheme for Plantation Crops (RISPC) for protecting the growers from the risks such as pest attacks, yield loss and income decline caused by fall in prices.

☀ In a significant step to reform the Public Distribution System (PDS), the government has made Aadhar card mandatory to better target ₹1.4 lakh crore subsidy, under the food security law. The government has allotted time till June 30 for those not having Aadhar card to get it for availing subsidised foodgrain under the Food Law.



☀The Supreme Court has refused to modify its order on suspension of licenses of traders dealing in selling and stockpiling of firecrackers. The ban on sale of firecrackers will continue in Delhi and NCR. It directed the Central Pollution Control Board to prepare an inventory of existing firecrackers with the traders and suggest measures for their disposal.


☀ India successfully test-fired its home grown Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile from launching complex-IV of Dhamara Abdul Kalam defence base off Odisha coast.

  • The interceptor is a 7.5-metre-long single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator would intercept a target, mimicking an incoming enemy missile, mid-air.
  • The Advanced Air Defence interceptor, dubbed as Ashwin, will destroy the incoming missile in the endo-atmospheric region at a low altitude of less than 30 kilometres.
  • The success of the AAD test will boost India strengthen its position in the exclusive club of US, Russia and Israel.


Important International Current Updates – 11 February 2017

☀ China has started taking fingerprints of all foreign visitors, aged between 14 to 70, at the Shenzhen International Airport from to improve their border checks. Foreigners with diplomatic passports will not have to provide their fingerprints and Chinese citizens from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will not be considered foreigners.

☀  US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe issued a joint statement after talks at the White House that, US and Japan have vowed to work together to strengthen their relationship in defence, strategic ties and agreed to make bilateral trade more fair.

☀ India has handed over to the UK an extradition request for absconding businessman Vijay Mallya who is facing cases of loan default and other financial irregularities. His now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to various banks.

  • Last month, a CBI court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Mallya in the Rs 720-crore IDBI Bank loan default case. Note that : Mallya had left India on March 2, 2016.


What is ‘extradition’? It is the surrender of a criminal to one country by another. This process is regulated by treaties between the two countries.

For extradition, the crime done by the accused should fall in the category of dual criminality. The crime should be a punishable offence according to the laws of both countries. Persons charged for political reasons are generally not extradited.

In India, the Extradition Act, 1962, regulates the surrender of a person to another country or the request for arrest of a person in a foreign land. The process of extradition is to be initiated by the central government. Currently, India has extradition treaties with 38 countries.



Daily Economics Current Affairs – 11 February 2017

☀ The Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has formed an advisory committee on financial technology or fintech-related issues, which would look at safeguards that can be put in place to facilitate crowdfunding of ‘genuine’ ventures and mobilise more household savings into the financial markets.

  • The committee will help to address the issues and mobilise domestic savings, which will spur growth of the economy.
  • It will help mobilise savings through technology solutions.


 Tax collection figures up to January this year show a consistent trend of healthy growth. The Net Indirect tax grew at the rate of 16.9 percent in January 2017 compared to corresponding month last year. Growth rate in net collections for Customs was 10.1 percent, Central Excise 26.3 percent and Service Tax 9.4 percent upto 31st of January this year.

☀ Industrial output fell in the month of December from a year earlier, driven down by a contraction in consumer and capital goods production. It fell 0.4 per cent in December as per the data release by the government. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, the contraction was due to fallout of demonetisation but expected a pick-up and greater expansion in the coming months.

☀ India has become the first team in history to score 600-plus in three consecutive Test innings, going past the mark during the Hyderabad Test against Bangladesh.

  • India scored 631 against England in Mumbai in December, following it up with their highest Test innings total of 759/7d at Chennai.
  • No team has scored 600-plus runs in three successive Tests.

☀ Virat Kohli has become the only player to score four double centuries in four consecutive Test series, hitting his career’s fourth 200 against Bangladesh. With this double ton, Kohli also equalled Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid’s record of three 200s in one season.
