National Important Current Affairs Update – 15 January 2017
☀ The Ministry of Water Resources has reconstituted a committee to address issues related to management of waters of the Krishna River between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
- Headed by: Former Central Water Commission chairman A K Bajaj.
- Mandate: To suggest mechanisms to facilitate effective functioning of the Krishna River Management Board in light of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
☀ The Ken-Betwa River Linking Project has received clearance from the green panel and Tribal Affairs Ministry on January 13, 2017.
- What the Ken-Betwa Project aims? This Rs. 9,393 crore project aims to transfer surplus water from the Ken River to the Betwa basin through concrete canals.
- Who will benefit? It will bring irrigation to India’s worst drought-prone Bundelkhand region. It will benefit Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in terms of meeting irrigation, drinking water and electricity needs of people across 6 districts in the two states.
- What will be done? Under the project a dam will be constructed across river Ken in Chhatarpur district of MP to irrigate land, serve drinking water in Bundelkhand region and generate 78 MW hydropower.
☀ India and the United States has signed MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) to collaborate in the fields of developmental activities and aid in Third World Countries. This was signed between the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and Union Ministry of External Affairs’ Development Partnership Administration (DPA). Both countries will collaborate on exchange of information and experience in sectors or issues pertaining to project development or implementation in partner countries.
☀ A week-long Happiness Festival “Anand Utsav” has begun across the Madhya Pradesh on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Note that: Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to set up Happiness Department. The state government is also setting up “Anandam Kendra” at district headquarters of the state.
☀The first ever Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, International Dance Festival will be held in Hyderabad, in which over 115 artists from ten countries will showcase traditional and contemporary dance forms of their countries, from the Asia-Pacific region.

☀ Ecuador has been appointed the new Chairman of the United Nations Group of 77 which promotes the interests of the 134 developing countries at the United Nations, including China. Previously, Thailand was Chairman for implementation of the 17 UN goals for 2030 to promote development and good governance, and preserve the environment.
☀ Darpan Basak and Ankit Kumar won the Young Travel Photographer of the year in the Places and Experiences category. This annual award was founded by photographers Chris and Karen Coe in 2003.
☀ The United States has announced the end of a 20-year economic embargo on Sudan. The USA has lifted a trade and financial sanctions in an effort to foster ties with the Sudanese government. Sudan will now receive the imported goods and services from the US.
☀ India and Sri Lanka has signed an MoU for the construction of 3000 rain water harvesting systems in northern Jaffna District of Sri Lanka.
☀ The 2017 Crafoord Prize has been conferred upon Japan’s Shimon Sakaguchi, Fred Ramsdell from San Francisco, and Alexander Rudensky of New-York. They will share the 6 million Swedish krona ($660,000, award). These researchers for their work on the discovery of regulatory T cells.

☀ The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), has decided to lower broker fees by 25 % to 15 rupees per transaction of one crore rupees as part of calibration of various other fees collected from different market intermediaries.
☀ India based Budget carrier SpiceJet and US based aircraft manufacturer Boeing have signed a deal worth $22 billion (Rs 150,000 crore) for the purchase of up to 205 aircraft. This is one of the largest orders ever made in the airline history. The agreement will also provided a big boost for Boeing in India.
☀ The RBI Note Mudran printing press in Mysuru has broken all its past record by printing highest number of currency notes in December.
Sports News Current Affair Capsule – 15 January 2017
☀ Gujarat has won its maiden Ranji Trophy title by 5 wickets after beating Mumbai at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. The Man of the Match is Parthiv Patel. With this win Gujarat became the 17th side in the history of domestic cricket to win the tournament. Note that: Mumbai which has won the Ranji title 41 times in the past, has ended up as the runner-up in the tournament for the 5th time.
☀ Ashish Shelar has been appointed as Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) President, succeeding Sharad Pawar.
☀ According to data released by the world football governing body FIFA, the Indian football team has jumped six places up to 129th, which is its best FIFA ranking since December, 2005, when they were at the 127th spot. Note that: India won nine of 11 international matches since last one year.
☀ Former Punjab Chief Minister and Akali Dal leader Surjit Singh Barnala has passed away at 91 years of age. He headed Akali Govt in Punjab and also remained Governor of 3 states. He also served as Union Minister.
☀ Noted political and social activist and president of All India Tribes and Minorities Front Mangal Singh Negi has passed away in Chandigarh at the age of 86 years.
