■ Jharkhand is celebrating its 18th years of establishment. On this day in 2000 Jharkhand was created carving out of Bihar.
■ The 38th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF) kickstarted at New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan. The 14-day annual event was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma. For this year’s fair, Afghanistan is the Partner Country, while Nepal is the Focus Country while Jharkhand is participating as a Partner State in the event.

■ Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and D V Sadananda Gowda has been given the charge of additional portfolios, following the demise of Union Minister Ananth Kumar.

■ Prime Minister Narendra Modi has felicitated the six winning teams, including three from India, of the first India-Singapore Hackathon, a platform for the youth of the two countries to harness and showcase their innovations. The winning teams from India were IIT Kharagpur, NIT, Trichy and MIT College of Engineering, Pune. The winning teams from Singapore comprised Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
■ The Indian Space Research organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched GSAT-29 satellite from Sriharikota. India has achieved significant milestone with our heaviest launcher lifting off the heaviest satellite from the Indian soil. It was boosted by two powerful strap-on solid rocket motors, the nearly 143-foot-tall (43.5-meter) Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk.3 (GSLV Mk.3).
- The GSAT-29 carries Ka and Ku band high throughput transponders intended to meet the communication requirements of users, including in the North East and in Jammu and Kashmir.
■ Social media Platform, Twitter has launched a #Powerof18 campaign aimed at encouraging youth to contribute in public debates and participate in civic engagement for the upcoming 2019 general elections in India. This campaign will serve as resource for young Indians to find more information about elections, support social causes they are passionate about and join public conversation.
■ Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is organizing 26th Conference of Central and States Statistical Organizations at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. The theme of this year’s Conference is “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics“.
The 2-Day conference will be see many papers being presented by central ministries and departments during the Conference. This conference is a major national forum for coordination between the central and State statistical agencies.
■ Young writer-critic Dr Debabhuson Borah has been honored with the prestigious Munin Barkotoki Literary Award 2018 in Assam for his book on literary criticism titled ‘Nirbochon‘.
- This annual Award, has been named after renowned writer, critic and journalist Munin Barkotoki, and was instituted to encourage young and promising writers in Assamese.
- The award carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with a citation and a plaque, a release of the Trust said here.
■ Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in consultation with National Institute of Wind Energy Chennai, has prepared a draft of new Scheme – Indian Wind Turbine Certification Scheme (IWTCS).
The Indian Wind Turbine Certification Scheme (IWTCS) is a consolidation of relevant National and International Standards (IS/IEC/IEEE), technical Regulations and requirements issued by Central Electricity Authority (CEA), guidelines issued by MNRE and other international guidelines. It also incorporates various best practices from other countries to ensure the quality of the wind energy projects.
The IWTCS is envisaged to assist and facilitate stakeholders such as- Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) ; End Users -Utilities, SNAs, Developers, IPPs, Owners, Authorities, Investors and Insurers ; Certification Bodies ; and Testing Laboratories.
Note that: Wind sector in India is a growing industry with increased utilization of wind energy for the power development. Under these developments, there is a need for comprehensive document which provides the complete technical requirements which shall have to be complied by the wind turbines for the safe and reliable operation by all the stakeholders.
International Current Affairs Capsule – 15 November 2018
■ Prime Minister Modi has attended the 2nd Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit with 16 member states. He reiterated India’s commitment to a high quality, comprehensive and balanced Regional Economic Partnership agreement at the earliest.
Note that: Mr Modi also held bilateral meetings with his Singaporean, Australian and Thai counterparts. PM Modi also met US Vice President Mike Pence on the sidelines.
■ The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously agreed to lift sanctions against Eritrea after 9 years. An arms embargo, asset freeze, and travel ban were imposed in 2009 amid claims that Eritrea had supported the al-Shabab militants in Somalia. However, Eritrea has always denied the accusations.
The resolution for lifting these sanctions against Eritrea, drafted by the UK, was backed by the US and its allies, which comes amid a thaw in relations between Eritrea and its neighbours following years of conflict.
Note that: Eritrea agreed on a peace deal with Ethiopia in June following two decades of animosity, while the leader of Eritrea and the UN-backed government in Somalia recently signed a joint cooperation agreement.
Eritrea is an African nation which is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. It gained independence from Ethiopia in the early 1990s, and war broke out later that decade over a border dispute.
■ US President Donald Trump has nominated Indian-American lawyer Neomi Rao to replace Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
■ Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Pradeep Kumar Gyawali has said that Eminent Persons Group (EPG) report is a blueprint and foundation of Indo-Nepal relations in the 21st century. EPG has prepared the report according to needs of the two countries and to redesign and redefine bilateral relations.
The EPG is a personal initiative of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. EPG was a joint mechanism consisting experts and intellectuals from India and Nepal. It was set up in February 2016 to make suggestions for updating all existing bilateral treaties and agreements between both the countries.

■ The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has appointed Siddharth Tiwari as the Chief Representative for Asia and the Pacific.
■ The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has revealed that over six crore income tax returns have been filed so far this year, which is 54 % increase over the last year. The number of people voluntarily filing tax returns has gone up substantially and 6.85 crore income tax returns were filed last year.

■ Asian Games gold medalist Hima Das to be appointed as UNICEF India’s Youth Ambassador. Hima will work towards raising awareness about the rights and needs of children and help amplify the voices of children and young people as active participants in decision making, thus contributing to their holistic development.
Note that: Hima Das won a silver medal in the 400 meters sprint and also a gold in the 4X400 meters relay at the Asian Games in Jakarta this year.
■ Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was declared the Spanish football league’s best player of the 2017-18 campaign by Marca at an awards ceremony in Barcelona. Messi had also won the Pichichi Trophy at the ceremony, an award given to the top scorer in La Liga each year.
■ The Indian women’s football team has qualified for the Olympic Qualifiers second round for the first time.
