☀ Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has paid tributes to the Indian Armed Forces on Vijay Diwas (16th December), which is a reminder of the valour and sacrifice of all those who fought courageously in the 1971 war India-Pakistan war, which led to creation of Bangladesh.

☀The Lok Sabha has passed the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill 2016, two days after the Rajya Sabha passed it with amendments. This new Bill aims at securing and enhancing the rights and entitlements of differently abled citizens.

  • The Bill recognises 21 disabilities compared with the7 disabilities in the 1995 Act. The list of disabilities now includes mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and chronic neurological conditions among others.
  • It also stipulates upto two-year jail term and a maximum fine of Rs 5 lakh for any kind of discrimination against differently abled people.

Haryana has became the first state in the country to launch Mahila Police Volunteer (MPV) initiative with aim for safety of women.

☀ The Government will deploy 600 young professionals or Zila Swachh Bharat Preraks (ZSBPs) across the country, one in each district, in order to boost Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

  • These professionals will be geared to strengthen capacities at the district level.
  • And provide these districts technical and management support, as they strive towards becoming Open Defecation Free.

☀ Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah has inaugurated the Air Ambulance Service with Helicopter H130 at the HAL airport in Bengaluru. It will cover the five southern states namely, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana in its first phase.

☀  Rio de Janeiro, has now officially entered the UN’s list of world heritage sites in recognition of its high granite cliffs, urban rainforest and beaches.

 Britain has become the first country in the world to allow “three-parent baby” fertility treatments after regulators gave their approval.

  • This is an advanced IVF technique, which uses DNA from two women and a man, to create an embryo.
  • It would allow mothers who carry disease-causing mutations in their mitochondrial genes to give birth to children free of the illness.

 The US has asked China to immediately return its unmanned naval probe (underwater drone) in international waters in the South China Sea which China has unlawfully seized from them.

☀ The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) comes into effect today. This scheme allows declaration of any unaccounted cash or deposit in a bank account, before April 1, 2017.

  • The PMKGY provides for 50 per cent tax and surcharge on declarations of unaccounted cash deposited in banks.
  • It will continue till 31st of March next year.
  • The declarations under this new black money disclosure scheme will be kept confidential.

☀India’s foreign exchange reserves declined by 887.2 million dollars to 362.987 billion dollars in the week ended 9th December.

☀ New Zealand women’s team captain Suzie Bates has become the first female cricketer to win both ICC’s ODI and T20I Player of the Year awards.

  • Bates had previously won the ODI Player of the Year award in 2013, and now has won her maiden T20I Player of the Year award this year.
  • Suzie Bates is 2016’s highest run-scorer in T20Is and second-highest in ODIs.


☀ Renowned economist Thomas Schelling who won a Nobel Prize in economics in 2005 for using Game Theory to explain nuclear strategy, has passed away at 95 years of age.  In his famous book, “The Strategy of Conflict” (1960), he had used game theory to analyse negotiations between nuclear powers.

  • Game theory is a mathematical analysis of strategies used in competitive situations.
