☀ Andhra Pradesh becomes first in Asia to introduce blockchain technology to fight cyber crime. The state government has introduced the technology in some departments to protect the database from being hacked.
- Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is known for tech-friendly governance, has inaugurated blockchain technology institute in Visakhapatnam.
- Six companies will train candidates in new technology to meet industry requirements given a shortage of specialists in blockchain technology globally.
What is Blockchain?
It is an encrypted technology to store records, origanlly designed in 2008-09 for transactions on the Bitcoin currency network.
The data is stored in small chunks across multiple computers to prevent loss or tempering of the data. Decentralising storage helps in enhancing safety, longetivity and authenticity of data.
☀ Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari has declared 1.65 lakh kilometre length of roads as National Highway and has said the National Highways would be increased to 2 lakh kilometre. He has also added that government’s port-led industrialisation strategy will have a major impact in the future.

☀ The UN Security Council has unanimously passed a draft resolution for extending the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan by a year. It has also asked the peacekeepers to increase efforts to prevent and respond to sexual assaults there. To ensure the safety of civilians, the security council has also proposed a 4,000-troop Regional Protection Force (RPF), in addition to the existing 13,000 peacekeepers already there.
☀ Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that Pakistan’s involvement in various terror attacks in India and Bangladesh has come out in open. Pakistan needs to be isolated for harbouring terrorists and supporting terror acts.
☀ 18th December has been observed as the International Migrants Day. The theme for 2016 is- A day without migrants.

Recent Developments on migration issue:
On September 19, 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a set of commitments during its first ever summit on large movements of refugees and migrants to enhance the protection of refugees and migrants. These commitments are known as the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants (NY Declaration).
The NY Declaration reaffirms the importance of the international protection regime and represents a commitment by Member States to strengthen and enhance mechanisms to protect people on the move.
☀ Ukraine has nationalised the country’s largest bank in an attempt to avoid a financial meltdown in the war-scarred former Soviet nation. The government has moved to take over PrivatBank after it became known that it was heavily burdened by bad debts.
- Kiev’s decision falls in line with International Monetary Fund’s demands for Ukraine to stabilise its financial sector in order to achieve sustainable growth.
- Note that: PrivatBank controls one-third of the country’s bank deposits and even has branches in the Baltic states.
☀ Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has suspended the elimination of the country’s largest denomination bill, after it has led to cash shortages and nationwide unrest. Under new orders, the measure has been postponed until early January.
- After Venezuela’s decision to demonetise the 100-bolivar note, there has been long queues banks, looting at shops, and anti-government protests.

☀ Amazon India has launched an online wallet called ‘Amazon Pay Balance’ which can only be used to make Amazon-based transactions. This ‘Amazon Pay Balance’ can be credited with money using internet banking or credit or debit cards. This balance can only be used to make payments for purchases on Amazon portal.
☀ Reserve Bank Governor Urjit Patel will brief the Parliamentary Committee on Finance about the demonetisation process and its impact on Thursday.
☀ Paytm has launched ‘Each one, teach one’ campaign to increase the digital penetration and inclusion in the country.
- It calls upon consumers and merchants across India to teach others on how to use Paytm to pay and accept money.
- This aims at transforming user behavior and further accelerating the country’s ongoing shift towards cashless.
☀ In the US, average price of regular-grade gasoline has jumped 6 cents over the past two weeks, to 2.26 US dollars a gallon. This increase in fuel price in the US mostly results from an agreement of November 30 by major oil-producing countries (under OPEC) to decrease output.
☀ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given permission to HDFC to raise Rs. 3,000 crore by issuing ‘masala bonds’ after it exhausted a Rs. 5,000 crore limit to issue these bonds. Note that: An Indian company can raise money in denominations of INdian rupee overseas by the means of “masala bonds”.
