National Important Current Affairs Update – 19 January 2017
☀ The 2nd edition of Ministry of External Affairs’ annual Raisina Dialogue was held in New Delhi.
The Theme of 2017 edition was: “The New Normal: Multilateralism in a multipolar world”.
☀ Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has announced that the state ministers will contribute Rs 25,000 per year for the Army Welfare Fund. The MLAs, MLCs, and MPs will contribute Rs 10,000 each per year towards the same.
☀ The Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) has commenced the first ever clinical trial in India to address the problem of hair loss in cancer patients during chemotherapy.
☀ The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the proposal for India’s taking full membership of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) Governing Council. This involves payment of annual contribution of US $5,00,000 to the IVI (it is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea).
☀ As many as 20,000 youths in Ganga basin states will be trained and deployed as ‘Swachhta Doots‘ in about 2,336 villages to spread a message of keeping the river clean. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved a Rs 10 crore project for training and deployment of the 20,000 youngsters for the purpose
☀ Delhi Police chief Alok Kumar Verma has been chosen to take over as the next CBI Director. He was selected by a committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice JS Khehar and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. However, Kharge had reportedly given a dissent note saying he didn’t get enough time to check the shortlisted candidates’ credentials.
☀ Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said the Union Cabinet has approved to repeal of 105 more obsolete and redundant laws.
- Note that: The Centre Government has repealed in total 1,280 old laws while the previous central governments in 64 years had repealed only 1,301 such outdated laws.

☀ 5th edition of the World Government Summit (WGS) will get underway soon in UAE as yet another initiative to generate ideas for global governance, from February 12-14 in Dubai. The leading global event will feature the first international gathering of experts on happiness under the title Global Dialogue for Happiness, as well as the Forum on Climate Change and Food Security, and an Arab Youth Forum.
☀ Libyan military commander General Khalifa Haftar visited Russian aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’ in the Mediterranean. This visit is seen as a show of Russian support to Libya in its fight against terrorism.
☀ Italian conservative Antonio Tajani has been elected the new President of the European Parliament (EP).
☀ United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Boris Johnson is on a two Day visit to India. He spoke at the Raisina dialogue and emphasised the need for a free trade agreement between India and UK.
☀ Venezuela‘s President Nicolás Maduro authorised new banknotes ranging from 500 to 20,000 bolivars to deal with the rising inflation in the country. Inflation in Venezuela is expected to reach 1,600% this year.
Economics News Current Affair Capsule – 19 January 2017
☀ E-commerce platform Flipkart has launched an SOS feature on the mobile app for its delivery staff which will alert the nearest field executives in case of an emergency. This project has been titled ‘Nanjunda’ after a delivery man who was murdered in Bengaluru last month by a gym trainer who did not have money to pay for his order.
☀ Five government-owned insurance companies – New India Assurance, United India Insurance, Oriental Insurance, National Insurance and General Insurance, have been cleared by the Cabinet for listing in stock exchanges. The government holds 100% stake in all five companies.
☀ Tata Elxsi, a design firm part of the Tata group, will become the first company to test self-driving cars in India. This company is seeking permission to test re-engineered sedans equipped with ultrasonic sensors and LIDAR radars in Bengaluru.
- Note that: Tata Elxsi is not building its own autonomous cars, but working on software for other carmakers.
☀ The government has clarified that its Income Declaration Scheme, known as the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, will apply only to cash or deposits in bank accounts and not for non-cash assets.
☀ Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance that about Rs. 9.2 lakh crore had been put back in circulation since the demonetisation of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 currency notes on November 8.

☀ Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has been inducted into the Legends Club ‘Hall of Fame’ at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai. Note that : Gavaskar was already inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2013.
☀ In Australian open, Leander Paes and his Brazilian partner Andre Sa lost in the first round of the men’s doubles.
☀ Top Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Ajay Jayaram reached the pre quarterfinals of the season-opening Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold in Sarawak. World no. 10, Saina will now face Indonesia’s Hanna Ramadini.
