National Important Current Affairs – 2 August 2017

■ Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India has constituted a Committee of Experts under the Chairmanship of Justice B N Srikrishna, former Supreme Court Judge. The committee is comprising of members from Government, Academia and Industry to study and identify key data protection issues and recommend methods for addressing them. The ministry recognises the importance of data protection and keeping personal data of citizens secure and protected. The committee will also suggest a draft Data Protection Bill.

■ The government has ordered state-run oil companies to raise subsidised cooking gas (LPG) prices by ₹4 per cylinder every month, effective from June 1. This will be till government subsidy is reduced to nil, or till March 2018, or till further orders, whichever is earliest.

■ The Supreme Court has barred firework manufacturers from using five chemicals that lead to air and noise pollution, that would also result in diminished sparkle effects and sound in crackers.
These chemicals are : Lithium, Antimony, Mercury, Arsenic, and Lead.

The responsibility to ensure compliance particularly in Sivakasi is given to the Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation (PESO).

Arvind Panagariya, the Vice Chairman of policy think-tank NITI Aayog, which replaced the 65-year-old Planning Commission, has announced his resignation from office citing need to go back in academia.
August 31 will be his last day in office.


International Current Affairs Capsule – 2 August 2017

Georgia has begun the ‘Noble Partner’ military exercise with the US and partner countries despite Russia’s earlier objections to the drills claiming they could destabilise the region.
Recall that : Russia and Georgia fought a war in 2008 that led to Russia occupying the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.


Economics Today’s Current Affair Capsule – 2 August 2017

■The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a Rs 3 crore penalty on state-owned Union Bank of India for “non-compliance” of Know Your Customer (KYC) norms in two separate cases.

■ Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has surpassed Hong Kong’s Li Ka-shing to become Asia’s second-richest person with a $35.2 billion (Rs 2.25 lakh crore) fortune, according to Bloomberg.


Sports Current Affairs – 2 August 2017

■  Under the revamped Khelo India proposal, there is an exclusive component called “Promotion of Rural, Indigenous and Tribal Games” for promotion and development of traditional sports.

Note that: Sports Authority of India (SAI) also promotes Indigenous Games and Martial Arts (IGMA) in 09 disciplines under its National Sports Talent Contest (NSTC) scheme in which talented children are selected in the age group of 8-14 years in 10 SAI adopted Centres.

The trainees and the schools are provided with sports kit, accidental insurance including medical, stipend, annual grant to the school for purchase of equipment and for organizing competitions for scouting talent.

Indigenous games to be promoted by SAI : 
  1. Kalaripayatu, Kerala
  2. Silambam, Tamilnadu
  3. Kabaddi, Telengana
  4. Archery, Jharkhand
  5. Malkhamb, Maharashtra
  6. Mukna, Imphal
  7. Thangta, Imphal
  8. Khomlainai, Assam
  9. Gatka, Punjab

These nine indegenous martial games will be promoted as traditional sports by the Ministry of Youth Affairs.



■ American neuroscientist Marian Diamond, who studied Albert Einstein’s brain in 1984, has passed away at 90 years of age. She was the first to show that anatomy of all animals’ brains can change with experience and improve with enrichment.
