☀In order to check infiltration and terrorism, the Border Security Force (BSF) will install laser walls and smart sensors along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. The satellite-monitored smart sensors will have night and fog operability tools to alert the border guards.
☀ Newly launched mobile payments app BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) has become the top of the charts of Google Play Store. It is named after Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the application is currently compatible only with Android phones. The app has a maximum limit of Rs 10,000 for a single transaction and a Rs 20,000 cap for transactions within 24 hours.
☀ Bombay High Court has recently given the Union government six months’ time to take a decision on making safety sealing mandatory for healthcare and hygiene products.
☀ Activist Irom Sharmila formally announced that she will be contesting the 2017 Manipur Assembly election from Thoubal, the constituency of Manipur CM Okram Ibobi Singh.
☀ Sikkim has become the first state in India to become fully organic. Around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land were gradually converted to certified organic land according to guidelines laid down in National Programme for Organic Production.
☀ India has successfully conducted the final test of the nuclear-capable Agni-IV missile from a road-mobile launcher on Odisha’s Abdul Kalam Island. The surface-to-surface missile can carry a 1-tonne nuclear warhead over 4,000 km.

☀ An entrepreneur of Indian origin, Sheikh Rafik Mohammed, has been given a top position in the defence department of Kyrgyzstan. Rafik belongs to Kerala and has earlier worked in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan.
☀Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain has conferred the country’s highest civilian honour ‘Nishan-e-Imtiaz’ on Army chief Qamar Bajwa and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Zubair Hayat in recognition of their services. This award is given to civilians based on their achievements towards world recognition for Pakistan or outstanding service for the country.
☀The UK government is encouraging the public to return old £1 coins as the Treasury will be introducing a new 12-sided coin to replace it. This measure has been introduced to end counterfeiting. The old One Pound coins shall become invalid by October next year.

☀ Mergers & acquisitions (M&A) are likely to be the favoured route for foreign direct investment (FDI) flows into India in the year 2017 as market consolidation is expected in sectors facing a cash crunch, such as e-commerce and telecommunications.
☀The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has held that death due to mosquito bite causing malaria is an accident and hence liable for the insurance claim. Adding that mosquito bite is something which no one expects, it would be very difficult to accept that malaria due to mosquito bite is a disease and not an accident.
☀ Country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) cut benchmark interest rate across various maturities by 0.9 per cent, effective from January 1. The bank has reduced marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR) by 0.9 per cent from 8.90 per cent to 8 per cent for 1-year tenure.
☀The government has announced that billing service charge in addition to taxes at hotels and restaurants is completely discretionary and if a customer is dissatisfied with the experience he/she can choose not to pay the service charge. This comes after the government received complaints from consumers that restaurants are charging ‘service charge’ in the range of 5-20%.

☀ Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has been appointed as an assistant coach to the Australian T20I squad against Sri Lanka.
☀ Indian tennis player Somdev Devvarman announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 31-year-old had won a gold medal for India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, following which he was felicitated with the Arjuna Award in 2011. Devvarman reached a career-best ATP singles ranking of 62 in 2011.
☀ Tyrus Wong, the artist whose works inspired the visuals in the 1942 Disney film Bambi, passed away at 106 of age. The award-winning concept artist had worked with Disney, Warner Brothers, and Hallmark.
