☀ Today (21st May) is ‘Buddha Purnima’, which marks the birthday of Lord Buddha. Also referred to as “Vesak”, it is recognized as the thrice sacred day that marks the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Lord Buddha.
- While Buddha was born in Lumbini in present day Nepal,
- He attained sambodhiprapti in Bodhgaya in Bihar.
- In Sarnath, he set in motion the wheel of the Dharma.
- Finally attained mahaparinirvana in Kushinagar.
☀ Several parts of the country continue to reel under intense heatwave. Rajasthan is experiencing relentless heat. Palodhi recorded the highest temperature in last 50 years at 51 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
- Note that: Previous record was of 50.6°C, which was registered in Rajasthan’s Alwar in 1956.
☀ The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, J P Nadda, has launched the Centre for Environmental Health in New Delhi to assess the impact of environment-related problems on health.
☀ The government has cleared the ordinance to postpone the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for state boards. This decision came after Union Health minister JP Nadda met state health ministers on the issue earlier this week.
- Note that: The Supreme Court on May 9 had ordered to make NEET mandatory to get into medical colleges across the nation.
☀ According to a UN environment report, the ‘Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6): Regional Assessments’ – Nearly 40 million Indians will be at risk from rising sea levels by 2050, with people in Mumbai and Kolkata having the maximum exposure to coastal flooding in future due to rapid urbanisation and economic growth.

☀India has sent two Naval ships with relief materials to Sri Lanka, which is severely hit by cyclone Roanu.
The Naval ships are, INS Sunayna and INS Sutlej, sent from the Southern Naval Command Kochi.
☀ The first World Conference on Tourism for Development (WCTD) is being held in Beijing, China.

☀ Tsai Ing-wen has been sworn-in as the 14th President of Taiwan, she has become first female President of Taiwan. She is the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which favours independence from China.
☀ Lhakpa Sherpa, a 42-year-old US-based Nepali climber, climbed the Mount Everest for the 7th time, breaking her own record for the most ascents to the world’s highest mountain by a woman.
☀ A two-day international Buddhist conference to mark the 2560th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha has begun in Khatmandu. Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, has advocated Buddhism as a means to avoid extremism in all forms.

☀Ella Mae Colbert, a 100-year-old have retired South Carolina teacher set a new world record for the fastest 100-meter sprint by a 100-year-old. Colbert completed the 100-meter sprint in 46.79 seconds, while breaking the previous 1 minute 17.33 seconds record held by Ida Keeling.
☀ Indian women’s team has settled for a bronze medal after suffering a 0-3 defeat at the hands of defending champions China in the semifinals of the Uber Cup badminton championship, at Kunshan in China. Top shuttlers Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu went down in their two singles match, while Jwala Gutta and N Sikki Reddy also bit the dust in the first doubles, thus ending India’s campaign.
☀ Indian mountaineer Rajib Bhattacharya died while descending from Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal, the 7th highest mountain peak in the world. Bhattacharya had complained of snow blindness (temporary eye damage caused by snow reflecting UV light) before collapsing. He had earlier climbed Mount Everest in 2011 and Mount Kanchenjunga in 2013.
