National Important Current Affairs – 26 February 2018
■ Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, addressed the 41st edition of Mann Ki Baat, and stressed the need to have women as equal partners in the development of the country. He noted that now the country is moving forward from the path of women development to women-led development.
Recalling Swami Vivekananda’s words that “the idea of perfect womanhood is perfect independence’, PM Modi stressed the need to ensure the participation of women in every field of life, be it social or economic life, it is our fundamental duty. Also, referring to International Women’s Day observed every year on March 8, he said, “We are part of a tradition where men were identified because of women – Yashoda-Nandan, Kaushalya-Nandan, Gandhari-Putra, these were identities of a son….”
The Prime Minister also referred to the newly launched ‘Gobar Dhan’ scheme where rural waste would be converted to clean energy through biogas under the government’s Swachch Bharat campaign. The ‘Gobar Dhan’ – Galvanising Organic Bio Agro Resources, aims to ensure hygienic environment in village and will monetise cattle dung and solid agricultural waste.
■ The Maharashtra government will digitise the functioning of private wholesale vegetable markets for better transparency and to prevent farmers from being cheated by middleman.
Note that: The Central Government has already launched a pan-India electronic trading portal, called e-NAM (National Agriculture Market), to facilitate farmers, traders, buyers, exporters and processors with a common platform for trading commodities.
■ The International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels (ICSB-2018) is jointly being organized by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India on behalf of Mission Innovation and Biofuture Platform in New Delhi. The two-day event will bring together experts from Biofuels sector to take stock of current knowledge, share information and best practices, and build consensus on the actions most needed to move forward. The conference aims to arrive at a clear understanding of the development in bio-economy made by participating countries, increase awareness of policy makers about the challenges faced by the industry-investor for commercial scale up of advanced biofuels.
The Sustainable Biofuel is one of the Seven Mission Innovation Challenges and India Co-leads this issue along with other countries Brazil, Canada and China.
■ The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested it’s Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle – Rustom 2 at its Aeronautical Test Range at Chalakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka. The flight assumes significance as this is the first flight in user configuration with higher power engine.
These unmanned vehicles, popularly known as Predator drones, can discreetly enter enemy territory and capture images and also destroy targets. Presently, India depends on the USA and Israel for such predator drones.
Hence, DRDO is developing a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle RUSTOM 2. It has the capability to fly for 24 hours at a stretch at over 200 kilometres per hour speed. It can conduct sustained surveillance but will also be able to destroy enemy targets. It will also have the capability to carry synthetic aperture radar, electronic intelligence systems and weapons.
■ A two day 21st National conference on e-Governance is being held in Hyderabad. The Government of India and Telangana Administrative Reforms department are jointly organising the conference with the main theme around- technology for accelerating development.
The conference aims to provide a forum for Secretaries of Administrative Reforms and Information Technology of the Centre and the State Governments, IT Managers and software solution providers to exchange views, discuss issues and analyse various solution frameworks.

■ The Government of India (GoI) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed an $84 million loan agreemnet for improvement and expansion of water supply in Bhagalpur and Gaya towns in Bihar. The Project will improve access to better quality and sustainable water supply, for the people of Bhagalpur and Gaya towns. It will also promote better water management practices that will result in a citywide coverage with 24-hour uninterrupted supply of treated water of 135 litres per capita per day in both cities.
It is the second tranche of ADB’s $200 million Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF) for Bihar Urban Development Investment Programme, since 2012. The loan will have a 25-year term, including a grace period of 5 years, an annual interest rate based on the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR), and a commitment charge of 0.15% per year.
■ The 4th edition of Economic Times – Global Business Summit (ET-GBS 2018) was held in New Delhi with theme “New Economy – New Rules”. The GBS is a flagship initiative of the Times Group to bring together visionaries, thought leaders, heads of state, policy makers, academicians and corporate heads cohesively driving a singular agenda for Scripting Economic Change, by connecting the building blocks of Economics for India and the Globe.

■ Indian stars Seema Poonia and MC Mary Kom have won Silver medals after losing in the final of the 69th Strandja Memorial Boxing tournament held at Sofia in Bulgaria. Mary Kom lost to Bulgarian Sevda Asenova in the 48 kilogram title bout, while Seema went down to Russian Anna Ivanova in the 81 kg final.
■ Reigning Asian Champion, Gopi Thonakal has retained his title at the New Delhi Marathon in New Delhi. While in the women’s event also, Monika Athare also retained her title. Gopi clocked 2 hour, 15 minute and 16 seconds to clinch the gold under ideal running conditions. Nitendra Singh Rawat was second, while Bahadur Singh Dhoni took the bronze. Around 65 elite Indian athletes took part in the full marathon of 42.195km.
■ Kunwar Bai, the brand ambassador of Swachch Bharat, has passed away at at age of 106 years. Kunwar Bai was in the national news as a mascot for Swachch Bharat campaign; when she sold all her goats to construct a toilet at her home.
