☀ The 4th edition of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise ‘MITRA SHAKTI 2016’ is being conducted in Ambepussa, Sri Lanka from 24 October to 06 November 2016. The focus of the joint exercise is to enhance inter-operability while carrying out Counter Terrorism (CT) operations under the United Nations Mandate.
☀ The Centre has issued a health advisory to states asking them to minimise bird-human interface to prevent an outbreak of bird flu. According to WHO, H5N8 virus is considered less risky of being transmitted to humans. Note that: Birds in Delhi, Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and Alappuzha in Kerala have been tested positive for avian influenza H5N8.
☀ The Uttarakhand High Court has ordered a complete ban on the sale of whitener in the state following death of a teenager in Bhowali town of Nainital district after he sniffed an excess of whitener for a kick. The court has also ordered that items such as Iodex and Feviquick should not be sold to children below 18 years of age in view of prevalent abuse of these among teenagers.
☀ Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured the military that any discrepancy in rank structure of its officers with those in civil administration is set to be resolved soon. This comes after a Defence ministry letter reportedly downgraded the comparative status of soldiers in comparison the civilian officers in the armed forces.

☀ Paul Beatty has become the first US author to win the Man Booker Prize, for his racial satire, ‘The Sellout’. The novel tells the story of a young black man who tries to reinstate slavery and racial segregation in a suburb of Los Angeles.

☀ All India Radio has won the first prize in the Community Service Announcement category of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) awards for 2016.

☀ The World Bank’s annual Doing Business 2017 report has placed 130th from a revised rank of 131 last year, with the nation’s ‘ease of doing business’ ranking improving in just two out of 10 parameters highlighting a gap between policy measures and their implementation. The report, however, recognized reforms by India in four areas: getting electricity, enforcing contracts, paying taxes and trading across borders.
☀ In a sudden and dramatic turn of events, Cyrus Mistry has been sacked as Chairman of Tata Group, India’s largest conglomerate and replaced by his predecessor Ratan Tata in the interim of four months. Note that: Mistry’s family firm Shapoorji Pallonji Group, holds 18.4 % in Tata Sons , the holding company of USD 100- billion salt-to-software conglomerate.
☀ The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued Certificates of Appreciation to tax payers for their contribution towards Nation building by e-mail in the following categories on the basis of the taxes paid by them for the Assessment Year 2016-17:
- Platinum : Tax contributed Rs. 1 Crore and above
- Gold : Tax contributed Rs. 50 Lakh to Rs. 1 Crore
- Silver : Tax contributed Rs. 10 Lakh to Rs.50 Lakh
- Bronze : Tax contributed Rs. 1 Lakh to Rs.10 Lakh
