☀ The first death anniversary of former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam is being observed today on 27th July. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Dr. Kalam on his first death anniversary. Dr. Kalam was famously known as ‘Missile Man of India‘ after Pokhran nuclear test and Agni, Prithvi missile tests.

  • Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He is also known as the ‘People’s President’.
  • Kalam passed away at the age of 83 while doing what he loved the most, delivering a lecture at the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RG-IIM) in Shillong.

☀ The Centre and States have agreed to keep Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates lower than the current levels of taxes. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley chaired the meeting of the Empowered Committee of state Finance Ministers in New Delhi.

☀ AFSPA activist Irom Chanu Sharmila (44) has announced to end her 16-year-long hunger strike against AFSPA on August 9, while also stating she would now contest 2017 Manipur state elections.

  • Irom Chanu Sharmila is known as ‘Iron Lady’. Sharmila said she no longer believes her fast will bring an end to the Army’s special powers under AFSPA in Manipur.
  • About Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) : It was enacted in 1958 to bring under control ‘disturbed’ areas.
  • AFSPA gives sweeping powers and immunity to the army in conflict-ridden areas.
  • How AFSPA is proclaimed? Section (3) of the AFSPA Act empowers the governor of the state or Union territory to issue an official notification, following which the centre has the authority to send in armed forces for civilian aid.

☀ The Lok Sabha has passed Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for opening six new IITs. This bill seeks to amend the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 to add six new IITs as institutions of national importance. These are:

  1. Bhilai (Chhattisgarh)
  2. Dharwar (Karnataka)
  3. Goa
  4. Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir)
  5. Palakkad (Kerala)
  6. Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh)

☀ The Centre has published the implementation notification of the 7th Pay Commission, stating that central government employees will get the revised pay from August.

  • Further, arrears, which are to be paid from January 2016, will be credited to employees within 2016-17.

☀Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, along with Union Ministers Kalraj Mishra and Venkaiah Naidu laid the foundation of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises technology centre at Pudi in Visakhapatnam district on Saturday.

☀ Former Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) official Dr. Budha Rashmi Mani has been appointed as Director General (DG) of National Museum.

☀ India has the highest number of stunted children in the world owing to ‘severe’ sanitation crisis due to lack of clean toilets and water, according to a report by international development charity WaterAid. This report states that 48 million, or 40% Indian children under the age of five, have stunted growth. India is followed by Nigeria and Pakistan at second and third place respectively.

  • She is the former first lady, New York senator and Secretary of State. Now Mrs Clinton is also the first female Presidential nominee of a major party in USA’s history.

☀ The US sought the removal of customs duties by India on information and communications technology (ICT) products to introduce these products into supply chain operations. The US is working with India for implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement, while stating that India should tap its ICT segment potential.

☀ The New Development Bank launched by BRICS- group of five emerging economies, has announced its first round of loans worth about 900 million dollars. The Bank held its first general meeting at its headquarters in Shanghai, China. The first set of loans will fund five renewable-energy development projects, related to solar and wind power generation.

☀ The International Tribunal in The Hague has ruled against the Indian government in a 2015 case filed by Devas Multimedia for cancellation of a deal by Antrix, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). 

  • What is the matter? The Antrix-Devas deal, involves leasing of spectrum from two satellites, which was terminated by the government in 2011.

Economics Important Current Affairs News Today – 27 July 2016

☀ Flipkart has announced the acquisition of fashion e-commerce platform Jabong through its unit Myntra for an undisclosed amount in cash. Jabong, which went live in 2012, has been looking for a buyer following cash crunch.

☀ Global payments leader SWIFT announced that ICICI Bank and Axis have become the first domestic lenders to sign up for its global payments innovation initiative, which already has over 70 other leading banks globally. This initiative aims to enhance cross-border payments by leveraging Swift’s messaging platform and global reach and in the first phase, the initiative will focus on business-to-business(B2B) payments.

☀ Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 2 crore on HDFC Bank for lapses in adhering to Know Your Customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) norms.
