National Important Current Affairs – 28 August 2017

Justice Dipak Misra took oath as the 45th Chief Justice of India, succeeding Chief Justice J S Khehar in India’s top court. Misra was administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.


■ The Defence Minister, Arun Jaitley, has inaugurated an Academy for Excellence and two state-of-the-art testing facilitiesEMC Test facility and Near Field Antenna Test Range at the Bengaluru Unit of the ‘Navratna’ Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

This EMC facility is the first of its kind in India having Anechoic Chamber. It can be used to conduct system level Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) tests for strategic Defence systems like Battle Tanks, Communication vehicles, Radar systems and Airborne systems including Nuclear Electro Magnetic Pulse (NEMP) and High Altitude Electro Magnetic Pulse (HEMP) testing.

Near Field Antenna Test Range (NFTR) is a critical infrastructure for calibration and testing of Radars and communication antennas.


International Current Affairs Capsule – 28 August 2017

Hurricane Harvey has became the most powerful storm to hit US’ Texas in more than 50 years. Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of over 200 km per hour.
Note that: This is the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, thereby ending a record 12-year period with no storms making landfall in the United States as a major hurricane.


Economics Today’s Current Affair Capsule – 28 August 2017

■ The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued the Guidelines for Tariff Based Competitive Bidding Process for Procurement of Power from Grid Connected Solar PV Power Projects. These Guidelines have been issued under the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003. The new guidelines will help enhance transparency in the procurement process, while protecting consumer interests through affordable power.


Neuralink Corp., the startup co-founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has taken steps to sell as much as $100 million in stock to fund the development of technology that connects human brains with computers.



Sports Current Affairs – 28 August 2017

■ Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Minister,  Vijay Goel has announced that the first edition of Rural Games or Grameen Khel Mahotsav to kick-start from Delhi between 28th August to 3rd September, 2017. The Rural Games aim at popularising the indigenous games like wrestling, athletics etc. and will also have fun games like Matka Race, Tug of War for senior citizens to add the fun element in the games.


■ India has won the South Asian Football Federation, SAFF, Under 15 Championship after defeating the host Nepal by 2-1 in the final at Kathmandu.


■ Ace shuttler P V Sindhu settled for a silver after losing to Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the final of World Badminton Championship at Glasgow, Scotland yesterday. Sindhu lost to her Japanese rival 19-21 22-20 20-22 after battling hard in the game.

Saina Nehwal also ended her campaign with a bronze medal.


■ Undefeated professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has announced his retirement after knocking out MMA Champion Conor McGregor in the ‘richest fight in history’.  The former welterweight boxing champion Mayweather, who had come out of a two-year retirement to take on the Irish mixed martial arts star has secured his place in boxing history with a record 50th straight victory.
