☀ The Centre has approved an investment of over Rs 5,530 crore for providing basic infrastructure in 110 cities across 6 states under AMRUT scheme.

  • About Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT): It is the new avatar of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
  • AMRUT adopts a project approach to ensure basic infrastructure services relating to water supply, sewerage, storm-water drains, transportation and development of green spaces and parks for meeting the needs of children.
  • Under this mission, 10% of the budget allocation will be given to states and union territories as incentive based on the achievement of reforms during the previous year.
  • Under this mission, states get the flexibility of designing schemes according to their needs.
  • States are only required to submit state annual action Plans to the centre for broad concurrence for funds to be released.
  • But, the central government will not appraise individual projects, unlike JNNURM.

☀The Indian Coast Guard ship ‘Arush’, the 17th in the series of twenty Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) has been commissioned at Kochi. It is designed and built by M/s Cochin Shipyard Limited.

☀ Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has convened a set of independent committees to recommend reforms in the defence sector.

  • The first committee – will recommend measures to “rebalance” defence allocations between revenue and capital expenditure. Where just 25% defence budget is available for equipment modernization after 75% goes on running expenses.
  • A second committee – will study “the setting up of a Defence Procurement Organisation in the Government of India”.
  • A third group of sub-committees – is meant to suggest “strategic partners” (SPs) model for private sector participation in “Make in India”, which the Dhirendra Singh committee had recommended last year.

Kerala High Court has stayed for two months the National Green Tribunal’s order directing the state government not to register any diesel vehicle with capacity of 2000 CC and more, except public transport and local authority vehicles.

☀ The Union environment ministry has proposed to overhaul the regulations which identify and protect wetlands under the Environment Protection Act (EPA).

☀ In Argentina, former junta leader and Argentina’s last dictator Reynaldo Bignone has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for crimes committed under Operation Condor, a conspiracy between South America’s dictators. 

  • Operation Condor was secretly launched in 1975 at a meeting of intelligence chiefs from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay to eliminate their left-wing opponents.
  • Operation Condor was named after the largest vulture in South America.
  • It later came to include Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.
  • Many left-wing activists were kidnapped and killed in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Bolivia.
  • By the time Operation Condor ended in the early 1980s, as many as 60,000 people may have been killed.

☀According to the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (Irena) Annual Review 2016, India ranks 5th in the world in renewable energy (RE) job creation, with 416,000 employed in the sector during year 2015. In the whole world, 8.1 million persons are employed in the clean energy space. While China tops the list, followed by Brazil.

☀ In Iraq, terror group Islamic State’s commander Maher Al-Bilawi is among 70 militants killed in coalition air strikes in the besieged Iraqi city of Falluja.

☀The Group of Seven leaders G-7, wrapping up a two-day summit, in Ise-Shima, Japan, have said that pumping up the world economy is an urgent priority.

RBI has directed all banks and white-label ATM operators to have chip-and-pin based card infrastructure. RBI has said though the cards comply with the new norms, ATMs continue to process card transactions based on data from the magnetic stripe, the old system. Resultantly, cards used in ATMs are more prone to skimming frauds.

☀ Rating agency Moody’s has pointed to the limited legal infrastructure at hand, where banks in India may get limited help from the new Bankruptcy Code to solve current asset quality woes. According to Moody’s, banks in India would still have limited avenues available to dispose of distressed assets.

☀A Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that BSNL has earned a profit of 1,72,000 crore rupees. While MTNL has also made a profit of 25 crore rupees.

☀ Bharti Enterprises founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal has received this year’s Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award.

  • This award is presented annually since 1968.
  • It is the highest honour the Harvard Business School confers on its alumni who have contributed significantly to their companies and communities.
