☀ Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a commemorative event to mark the 300th Martyrdom Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in New Delhi. Recently, a coin was released by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to mark the 300th martyrdom day of Banda Bahadur.

  • About Banda Bahadur: He had established his rule to protect the honour and traditions of Sikh people by defeating the Mughals in 1710. At the age of 46 he was captured and executed by the Mughals in Delhi, in 1716.

☀ Haryana Education Minister, has said that moral education would be introduced as a subject for students of Classes VI to plus two level in the State. Extracts from religious texts such as Bhagavad Gita, Quran, the Bible and Guru Granth Sahib had been incorporated in the curriculum of the Moral education.

☀ The Maharashtra government has promulgated an ordinance that will allow farmers to sell their produce, especially fruits and vegetables, outside the APMC markets and directly to their preferred buyer. After the ordinance gets approval of the governor, farmers will be free to sell their produce to malls and private retailers and earn higher profits. Farmers can also lodge a complaint with the authority if they are underpaid.

☀ Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked all States to put in place a 14-point charter to tap the potential of youth to the optimal level and increase their participation in national schemes.

☀ The Union Law Ministry has asked the Law Commission to examine in detail all issues pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code and submit a report to the government.

  • Note that: Article 44 of the Constitution calls for a Uniform Civil Code.
  • Present status : Government will take a decision on the future course of action on the basis of the Law Commission report.

  The international community including the United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the terrorist attack at a restaurant in Dhaka which has claimed the lives of 22 people, mostly foreigners, including an Indian girl.

☀ UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on the international community to counter violent extremism with preventive measures. He presented his ‘Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism’ to the UN General Assembly as the 193-member body adopted a resolution on the UN Global Counter Terrorism Strategy with the aim of security peace and prosperity. This Stategy is an instrument adopted by the Assembly in 2006 to enhance national, regional and international efforts to counter terrorism.

☀ The State Bank of India has signed an agreement worth 4,200 crore rupees with the World Bank to support its solar programme. Under this, at least 400 MW solar capacity will be created across the country.

  • Agreement will help the bank to finance grid connected rooftop solar photovoltaic projects at very competitive rates.
  • Eligible beneficiaries would be:  developers, aggregators and end-users, who wish to set up solar projects mainly on commercial, industrial and institutional rooftops.

☀ The Union Sports minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced a grant of 10 lakh rupees for ailing Olympic gold medallist hockey legend, Mohammed Shahid, who is undergoing treatment for serious liver and kidney ailment. Known for his artistic stickwork, Shahid was a member of the V Baskaran led Indian team that won its last gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

☀ World number one Novak Djokovic has made a shock early exit from the Wimbledon Tennis Championships being held in London. He lost in the third round, when 28th seed Sam Querrey of the United States recorded victory over Djokovic. This ends the 3-time winner and defending champion’s hopes of a calendar-year Grand Slam.


☀ Former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard has passed away in Paris at the age of 85. Rocard, was a socialist, who served as the Prime Minister from 1988 to 1991 under President Francois Mitterrand. He was regarded as a staunch advocate of the European Union.
