>> National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has collaborated with Germany for a special programme on ‘Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security’, under German government’s special initiative ‘One World, No Hunger’ for addressing the food security needs of countries.
- India is the only country in Asia chosen for this initiative.
- ‘One World, No Hunger’ addresses – food and nutrition security ; promotion of innovation, protection and sustainable use of natural resources in rural areas; promotion of responsible land use and access to land.
>> Forest Fire in Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttrakahnd has been contained to a large extent. More than 2000 hectare of land has been affected due to fire.
>> Hundreds of taxi drivers blocked major roads in Delhi in protest against a Supreme Court decision to ban diesel taxis in the national capital, resulting in massive traffic jams.
>> CBI has questioned former Air Force chief SP Tyagi in connection with alleged corruption AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal. The allegation against him was that he had reduced flying ceiling of the helicopter from 6000 metres to 4500 metres to include AgustaWestland in the bids.
>> Independent MP and businessman Vijay Mallya has resigned from the Rajya Sabha, sent his resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman. This comes a week after the Ethics committee decided to unanimously expel him from the House. However, it had given him a week’s time to explain his conduct.
>> The central ammunition depot of the Army in Maharashtra has devised a method of utilising solar energy for disposing ammunition that have completed their shelf life.
- This is the first of its kind development in the world.
- Steam generated by concentrated solar technology (CST) is used to melt explosive material inside shells.
- In CST, mirrors are used to concentrate solar energy to convert water to steam which is then directed on the shells.
- Medium and high calibre ammunition contain Tri-Nitro-Toulene (TNT), with a melting point of 80° Celsius which can be melted with steam.
- Shells are rendered 100% free from explosives and this recovered TNT filling can be re-casted for reuse.
>> Parliament has approved the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016 with the Rajya Sabha adopting it. This Bill provides for transfer of mining leases, which have been granted through procedures other than auction and where minerals are used for captive purpose.
>> Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu flagged-off the much awaited East-West corridor of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) – south India’s first underground metro.

>> India has said that Italy is misrepresenting a UN Arbitration Court’s order in Italian marine case. While Italian Foreign Ministry views the tribunal ruling directing India to release Salvatore Girone, an Italian marine who is accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the Indian coast. India sees the tribunal order affirming Supreme Court’s authority.
>> United States has informed Pakistan that it will have to finance the purchase amounting to 699 million US dollars, for all eight US F-16 fighter jets itself after members of the US Congress objected to the use of taxpayers money to pay for them.

>> The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has refused to withdraw its directives for mandatory disclosure of top-management salary by mutual funds.
> Core sector industries grew by 6.4 percent in March, as against a decline of (-)0.7 in the same month last year. This happened due to high production rate of fertilizer, cement, petroleum and electricity. While in February, the infrastructure sector growth had gone upwards at a 15-month high of 5.7 percent.
>> SBI has lowered its lending rates by 5 basis points to 9.15%.
