☀ Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal announced that the state government will connect all major cities and towns of the state with 4-6 lane roads by year 2017.
☀ The CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with coal supplying companies and power utilities for conducting quality analysis of coal supplied.
☀ The Union Cabinet has approved signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Tanzania for bilateral cooperation in water resources management and development. Under this MoU, enhanced cooperation will include techniques in water harvesting, groundwater and surface management and development and aquifer recharge.
☀ The government has announced that the average days of employment generated per household under MNREGA in the financial year 2015-16, has been the highest in eight years, amounting to 49 days. Note that: 55% of these beneficiaries were women, where a large number of them from vulnerable sections like SCs.
☀ The HRD Ministry will confer National-level awards to 100 schools which have taken significant steps towards fulfilling the mandate of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign. All government schools in rural and urban areas are eligible for the ‘Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar’ 2016.
☀ All India Services (IAS, IFoS, and IPS) officers’ foreign posting can now be extended upto 7 years at a stretch after completing the existing five-year limit, with the permission from concerned minister.

☀ The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has elected four countries, namely, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Sweden and Kazakhstan as the non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). These countries have two-year term starting from 1 January 2016 till 31 December 2018. These newly-elected countries will replace previous non-permanent members, viz., Spain, Malaysia, New Zealand, Angola and Venezuela.
☀ NASA successfully tested the booster designed for its Mars-bound rocket ‘Space Launch System’, which is the most powerful rocket in the world so far.
☀ South Korea has retained the top spot in internet speed globally with an average speed of 29 Mbps in the first quarter of 2016, according to a report by Akamai. While Norway and Sweden have been ranked second and third respectively.
☀ For the first time in the history of the judiciary of the Muslim-majority country, Two women, Noor Huda Roslan and Nenney Shuhaidah Shamsuddin, have been appointed as Judges in Malaysia’s Islamic Shariah High Court.

☀ In the latest World Bank ranking of the global logistics performance, India is ranked 35th as against the 54th spot in the previous 2014 report. India has ranked ahead of other economies like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Germany topped the rankings, followed by Luxembourg and Sweden.
- Civil war torn, Syria is ranked lowest in the list.
☀ The Cabinet has cleared the Model Shops and Establishments Act, which will permit movie theatres, malls, and other such business to remain open 24 x 7.
- This Act will be applicable on all public amusement establishments that have at least 10 employees and are not covered under the Factories Act 1948.
- Presently, only larger manufacturing units and service-sector firms can operate 24 x 7.
☀ The Union Cabinet has approved the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission which had proposed an average 23.55% increment in the salaries, allowances and pension of central government employees. This will benefit 48 lakh employees and 55 lakh pensioners. Further, it will put an additional burden of ₹1.02 lakh crore on the exchequer annually.
