National Important Current Affairs – 5 March 2018
■ The 2nd part of the budget session of Parliament begins today after nearly a month-long recess. The first session began on the 29th of January and concluded on 9th of February after the presentation of Union Budget and adoption of the motion of thanks to President’s address to the joint sitting of both the Houses. The present second part of the budget session will continue till 6th of next month.
■ National carrier Air India operated a flight on the Kolkata-Dimapur-Kolkata route with an all-women cockpit and cabin crew, in view of the ongoing International Women’s Week.
■ The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), which will act as an independent regulator for the auditing profession which was one of the key changes brought in by the Companies Act 2013. The jurisdiction of NFRA for investigation of Chartered Accountants and their firms will be extended to the listed companies and large unlisted public companies.
The Cabinet has also given nod to the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 meant to deal with those escaping overseas to avoid getting caught. The Bill will help in laying down measures to deter economic offenders from evading the process of Indian law by remaining outside the jurisdiction of Indian Courts. The economic offences worth Rs 100 crore or more will come under the purview of the Bill.
■ The Karnataka government has launched the world’s largest solar park ‘Shakti Sthalaon’ at Pavagada in Tumkuru district, which is about 180km from Bengaluru. This solar park has a capacity of 2,000 MW and has been set up at an investment of Rs 16,500 crore. The park will create employment and act as an incentive for natives and farmers to explore new opportunities of socio-economic growth in the region.

■ India, Bangladesh and Russia have signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in construction of the Rooppur nuclear power plant near Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the first initiative under India-Russia nuclear deal to undertake atomic energy projects in a third country. This will also be India’s first atomic energy venture abroad.
■ Pakistan has elected Krishna Kumari Kohli as its first Dalit woman Senator. She won the election for the reserved seat for women from Sindh Province, representing a major milestone for women and minority rights in Pakistan. Earlier, Pakistan People’s Party had elected first Hindu woman named Ratna Bhagwandas Chawla as a Senator.
■ The 6th Annual ‘Garuda Shakti’ exercise between the Special Forces of the Indian Army and the Indonesian Army has concluded at Bandung. This exercise includes experience sharing in counter-terrorism operations, close quarter combat, and other areas of special operations.
