National Important Current Affairs – 6 April 2019

■  The Hindu New Year ‘Vikram Samvat-2076′ is beginning on 6th April with celebrations across the country. Traditional new year festivities are being celebrated in several parts of the country today. Festivals of Chaitra Sukladi, Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Cheti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba are being celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety across the country.

Chaitra Navratri also begins from Saturday. Devotees thronging at temples to worship Maa Shailputri on the auspicious day of navratri. Navratri is a Hindu festivals that is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine divine avatars for a period of nine days.

Various festivals in different regions on the occasion :

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Ugadi.
Karnataka: Yugadi /Ugadi.
Maharashtra: Gudi Padwa.
Sindhis: Cheti Chand.
Manipuris: Sajibu Cheiraoba.
Hindus of Bali and Indonesia also celebrate their new year on the same day as Nyepi.
Kashmir: Navreh.


■ According to the Home Ministry, Jammu and Kashmir government has withdrawn security cover from 919 undeserving persons including 22 Separatist leaders since Governor’s Rule in the State. The move has resulted in the availability of 2,768 Police personnel and 389 vehicles for public service.

The Ministry directed the State Government that a case by case in-depth review may be taken on merits. Jammu and Kashmir State Security Review Coordination Committee SRCC held regular meetings to examine all the ongoing cases. As per the directions of Centre, SRCC will continue for further examining and reviewing the requirement of security cover on case to case basis.


■  The Supreme Court has refused to grant an interim stay on the operation of electoral bonds scheme and asked the applicant Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), a not-for-profit organization, to file an appropriate application for it. The Election Commission has also given an affidavit that the electoral bond scheme will have a serious impact on transparency in political funding.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the issue requires detailed hearing which will be taken up on April 10.

About Electoral Bonds issue: The electoral bond scheme was introduced by the centre through a notification on 2 January 2018. The scheme allows any Indian citizen or a body incorporated in India to purchase bonds from State Bank of India for any value to make donations to a political party of their choice. The bond does not carry the name of the donor for donations of less than Rs 20,000. The identity of such donors is known only to the bank. The centre introduced the bond stating that it was an endeavour to cleanse political funding. However, critics argue that the anonymity of donors compromises any such stated objective.


■  Supreme Court turned down the plea challenging recent Aadhaar Ordinance taken up by the Centre and asked them to approach the high court first. A bench of Justices S A Bobde and S A Nazeer said that they will not be expressing anything on the merits of this case and they would have the view of the high court for this issue.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, told the bench that it is a matter of national importance and the apex court should decide this issue. The bench, however, allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea and granted liberty to approach to the high court.

■ The final results of Civil Services Examination, 2018 have been declared. The Civil Services Examination, 2018 was conducted on 3rd June, 2018. A total of 10,468 candidates qualified for appearance in the Written Examination which was held in Sep – Oct, 2018.

  • Kanishak Kataria has topped the Civil Services Examination, 2018. He belongs to SC Category and has qualified the examination with Mathematics as his optional subject. He has graduated with B. Tech (Computer Science& Engineering) degree from IIT, Bombay.


International Current Affairs Capsule – 6 April 2019

 The South Korean government has declared a state of national disaster over the huge blaze that engulfed 5 cities and counties on the northeastern coast. One person died after being hit by a falling object and eleven were wounded within the blaze. Thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate overnight. 
The fire seemingly from a transformer spark close to a resort within the city of Goseong and spread to the nearby mountains, littered with robust wind, the flame quickly spread to nearby mountainous regions as well as the Inje county and the cities of Sokcho, Donghae and Gangneung in Gangwon province.


Nepal-India Franchise Investment expo and conclave will be held in capital of Nepal from 15, 16 May, 2019. This event primarily focuses on building the relations between India and Nepal through entrepreneurship development. The conclave is organized by Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce (FNCCI) in association with Embassy of India and Franchise India. This event is expected to introduce new investment opportunities to Nepalese market and can facilitate in transfer the leading Indian iconic brands to Nepal.


Economics Today’s Current Affair Capsule – 6 April 2019

Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has rejected media report which claimed that there had been a spike in the number of income tax stop filers in the year of demonetization. It has termed the report as false and baseless. In a statement, the CBDT said, it added 1.07 crore, new taxpayers, while the number of dropped filers came down to 25.22 lakh in 2017-18, showing the positive impact of demonetisation. 

Around 6.87 crore Income Tax Returns were filed during the financial year 2017-18 as compared to 5.48 crore filed during 2016-17. The CBDT asserted that the note ban had a positive impact on the widening of tax base and direct tax collections.


■ The World Bank’s executive board has unanimously selected 63-year-old David Malpass, who is currently Under Secretary of Treasury for International Affairs in the US Government, as the bank’s 13th President for a five-year term.

It’s Noteworthy that, all 13 presidents of the of the development lender have been American men.

  • The World Bank President is Chair of Boards of Directors of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and International Development Association (IDA).
  • The President is also ex officio Chair of Boards of Directors of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), and the Administrative Council of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

Note that: The previous World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim had made the surprise resignation after being six years in the post even though he was not due to leave until 2022.


Sports Current Affairs – 6 April 2019

The Supreme Court said that BCCI Ombudsman Justice D K Jain will reconsider in 3 months for the issue of quantum of punishment to be given to former Indian cricketer S Sreesanth for his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot fixing scandal. 

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and K M Joseph said this while hearing an application filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI has aforementioned that since its disciplinary committee, that had earlier dealt with Sreesanth’s matter was no longer operational, the matter is therefore referred to the ombudsman appointed by the apex court.
