Today’s National News Current Affairs – 7 January 2017

☀ The 14th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) convention begins in Bengaluru today. This three-day event will begin  with the Youth PBD, the theme of which is ‘Role of Diaspora Youth in the Transformation of India’Vice President of Suriname Michael Ashwin Adhin will deliver a keynote address in the inaugural session.

Note that: Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has been held traditionally on 9th January every year to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi as a Pravasi from South Africa to India.

☀ 9-day New Delhi World Book Fair has begun in Pragati Maidan, with the theme ‘Manushi’ which will focus on writings on and by women.

The National Book Trust (NBT) is also celebrating 60 years of its foundation. It will showcase its journey in promoting books and reading at a special exhibit called ‘This is no looking back’.

☀ India’s gross domestic output is expected to grow at a slower pace of 7.1 per cent in 2016-17 compared to the 7.6 per cent clocked in the previous year, according to Chief Statistician TCA Anant.

☀ The Supreme Court has declined to grant urgent hearing of a plea to postpone the tabling of the annual budget until after the Assembly elections in five States, including Uttar Pradesh.

 Maharashtra government has launched a new Shivgramin Taxi Scheme. These new taxis will be orange and white in colour and will ply outside municipal limits. The six-seater taxis are meant to provide an alternate mode of public transport to people in rural and semi-urban areas of Maharashtra.

Important International Current Updates – 7 January 2017

☀ France has passed a law making every citizen an organ donor, unless they opt out by registering with a national refusal registry. This presumed consent law has come into effect from 1st January 2017, was passed in hopes of increasing organ and tissue donation.

☀ Israel will cut a substantial amount in its annual dues to the United Nations this year in protest of last month’s UNSC resolution condemning Israeli settlement activity on occupied Palestinian territories.

  • Israel’s UN Mission has stipulated that 6 million dollars out of more than a regular 40 million dollars allocated to anti-Israel bodies will be deferred.

 The US trade deficit in November rose to the highest level in nine months as imports of oil and other foreign goods increased, while American exports fell for a second consecutive month.

☀The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has declared the year 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

 US First Lady Michelle Obama has selected Swetha Prabakaran, a 16-year-old Indian-American to serve in the inaugural Student Advisory Board of the ‘Better Make Room’ education campaign. The only Indian-American on the list, she has been chosen in recognition of her efforts to educate the youth in computer sciences.

  • Swetha was previously honoured as a White House Champion of Change.


Daily Economics Current Affairs – 7 January 2017

☀ The Supreme Court has restrained transfer of 2G spectrum licences from Malaysia’s Maxis, originally allotted to Aircel in 2006, to any other telecom company. The bench, headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, also proposed to restrain earning of any revenue by using these licences.

☀ Japan has decided to be associated with the development of Chennai, Ahmedabad and Varanasi as smart cities in the country. This comes as a part of government’s scheme to develop 100 cities as smart cities.

☀ The Employees’ Provide Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made Aadhaar mandatory for all its about 50 lakh pensioners and around four crore subscribers.

  • Note that: The central government contributes 1.16 per cent of the basic wages as subsidy to every members Employees Pension Scheme Account in addition to 8.33 per cent deposited by their employers every month.

☀ The 16th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) was held in New Delhi, chaired by Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.  It was attended by heads of all financial sector regulators as its members.

☀ In Tennis, the Indian team of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja has stormed into the Final of ATP Chennai Open.

☀ Indian cricket entered a new era as Virat Kohli was officially appointed captain for all three formats of the game. 

  • He took over leadership for the upcoming limited-overs series against England.
  • All-rounder Yuvraj Singh makes a return to ODI and T20 team after nine months.
  • Batsmen Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane have been picked only for the ODIs.
  • While veteran Ashish Nehra makes a comeback in the T20 squad
  • MS Dhoni will play as Batsman-Keeper only after serving as captain for nine years.
