>> In West Bengal, people are paying homage to Kavi-Guru Rabindranath Tagore today on the Nobel laureate’s 155th birth anniversary.
As per the Bengali calendar, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore is observed on the 25th day of Boisakh, which is today. In other places, his birthday was celebrated on 7th May, as per the Gregorian calendar.
>> In a unique initiative in Puducherry, the Election Commission is sending out ‘Meghdoot’ postcards to 3 lakh voters requesting them to cast their votes in the May 16 Assembly polls. The cards carry a message that visually challenged voters will also have the Braille voting system. This drive is to ensure that voters turn up in overwhelming numbers.
>> Railways has launched the Bharat Darshan Tourist train for pilgrims to visit Shirdi, Tirupati, Jagannath Puri, Gangasagar, Baidyanath Dham and Jyotirlingams, Gaya, Banaras and Ayodhya, Kanchipuram, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Mysore and Bangalore.
>> According to an amendment in the Finance Bill, 2016, information related to taxpayers disclosing previously concealed income can be revealed under the Budget’s Income Declaration Scheme, if it is deemed to be in public interest. The amendment is aimed to allay any misconceptions that the government would keep such taxpayers’ details confidential under any circumstance.
- The Income Declaration Scheme offers individuals with undisclosed income to declare it by paying a penal tax rate of 45% on such income.
>> The government has halved the previously estimated 10-year timeframe to complete the Sagarmala port development project. Port-led development has potential for direct employment generation for 40 lakh persons and for 60 lakh persons indirectly.
- About Sagarmala Project: The project seeks to develop a string of ports around India’s coast.
- To promote “Port-led development” along India’s 7500 km long coastline.
- It aims to develop access to new development regions, enhanced connectivity with main economic centres and beyond through expansion of rail, inland water, coastal and road services.
- The Union Ministry of Shipping is the nodal ministry for Sagarmala initiative.

>> India has conveyed to China that it cannot have double standards on terrorism. This move comes after the neighbouring country blocked India’s bid at the United Nations to ban Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, who was also the mastermind of the Pathankot terror attack.
