2014 Indian Sports Achievements – General Awareness Study Material & Notes

The year 2014 saw many remarkable victories in Indian Sports. This field is constantly developing with the efforts of our hardworking Sportspersons. Since this is a youth-oriented area, the examiners love to ask about these achievers. Especially the bank examiners would certainly venture into this area to fish for some questions from here. Therefore, here is a short and quick revision notes for the aspirants.

Glasgow Common Wealth Games 2014 Medals won by India :

India won a total of 64 medals with 15 Golds, 30 Silvers, 19 Bronzes in the Glasgow CWG held in 2014. India stood at 5th position overall.

Incheon Asian Games 2014 Medals won by India :

India stood at 8th position with 57 medals in total. There were 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze.

Badminton 

  • Kidambi Srikanth – He won the China Open Super Series, he faced World and Olympic champion, Lin Dan in final. He has achieved rank No. 4 in the world by year end.
  • Saina Nehwal – thrashed World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain to win the Australian Super Series and  China Open.
  • PV Sindhu – won bronze medal in Commonwealth games at Glasgow. Teaming with Saina Nehwal she achieved bronze medal in the Uber Cup and Asiad.
 Wrestling
  • Yogeshwar Dutt –  He won gold medals at both the commonwealth games at Glasgow and Asian games at Incheon in the year 2014.

Athletics 

  • Vikas Gowda –  He won silver in the Men’s Discus Throw competition in the Asian Games 2014 held at Incheon.

Shooting 

  • Jitu Rai – He won seven medals in the year 2014. Jitu Rai won three World Cup medals in June in the categories of – 10m air pistol silver in Munich, a silver medal in 50m free pistol and a gold medal in 10m air pistol. He has won a 50m free pistol gold medal in Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and in the Asian Games in Incheon.
  • Abhinav Bindra – He won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games and a bronze in Asian Games at Incheon.
  • Gagan Narang – He won a silver medal at the CWG Glasgow.

Billiards & Snooker

  • Pankaj Advani – He won the World 6-red snooker title in July. He also won the World Team Billiards Championship. He also grabbed the World Championship at Leeds for the third time.

Lawn Tennis 

  • Sania Mirza – She won her careers third Mixed doubles Grand Slam title with the US Open title, where she teamed with Brazilian player Bruno Soares. She also won the WTA Championship at Singapore with Cara Black as the partner. She became the first Indian to win the season-ending championship. In the Asian Games, she won a gold in mixed doubles teaming with Saketh Myneni and a bronze in Women’s doubles with Prarthana Thombare.

Boxing 

  • Mary Kom – She won a gold medal at Incheon fighting in the 51 kg category against Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova. She had won a Bronze medal at London Olympics.
  • Sarita Devi – She had refused to wear the bronze medal around her neck that was awarded to her after she lost in a controversial bout during the Asian Games held at Incheon.

Squash 

  • Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa won India’s first-ever CommonWealth Games gold medal in Squash. Both belong to Tamil Nadu.
  • Saurav Ghosal – He won silver medal in the Asian games, closely losing the chance to win the gold.

Golf 

  • Anirban Lahiri – He won the Indonesian open title and then entered the rank of top 100 in the world by winning the Macau Open. He achieved the No. 1 rank in Asia in 2014, this won him the prestigious the Arjuna Award.

Swimming 

  • Sandeep Sejwal – He won a rare Asiad medal for India in swimming by finishing with a bronze in 50m breaststroke final in Incheon Asian Games.

Hockey 

  • PR Sreejesh – The Goalkeeper performed very well to help Indian Hockey Team, an Asian Games Gold medal  by saving two vital strikes in the final match’s Shootout with Pakistan.
